Naughty Dog has recently upgraded the remastered version of The Last of Us Part II with a fresh mode designed for fans to explore. This new mode is called Chronological Mode, which restructures the extensive campaign into a systematic timeline, offering players a unique perspective on the game’s narrative and characters.
In a recent update on the PlayStation Blog, it’s mentioned that the new Chronological mode offers an opportunity for players to delve even deeper into the story of Part II. This mode allows players to witness how events unfold sequentially, such as understanding why Ellie receives a guitar and subsequently learns to play it more easily. Additionally, navigating through Seattle highlights intriguing similarities in the intertwining paths of Ellie and Abby’s travels.
Discover a fresh perspective on The Last of Us Part II storyline by diving into Chronological mode, an innovative reordering of the gameplay that allows you to progress through the tale in chronological sequence. Through the Chronological Mode, we will now follow each character’s path concurrently, shifting between their unique viewpoints from their early teenage years all the way to their equally distressing experiences in Seattle. The idea of witnessing the last days of Ellie and Abby in Seattle one after another, without any interruptions, is already emotionally intense due to the continuous barrage of violence.
In different opinions, this action might be seen as innovative or blasphemous. Released in 2020, The Last of Us Part II garnered both praise and criticism for its storyline and non-traditional structure. Notably, a group of players at the time strongly disapproved of the choice to switch from Ellie, one of the franchise’s key characters, to Abby, a new character who was previously introduced as one of the sequel’s antagonists, roughly halfway through the game. This shift in perspective is also being implemented in the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, with its upcoming third season focusing on Abby, similar to the second half of the sequel game.
Apart from Chronological Play, the recent update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered introduces new trophies and costumes for gamers to earn. This updated version, released only a year ago, also includes a roguelike mode known as No Return. In this mode, players can choose characters from the game’s cast and battle through challenging, randomly generated scenarios across various settings within the game.
In this recent update, Naughty Dog has introduced two fresh character skins for players to choose, which pay homage to their other prominent franchise, Uncharted. If players manage to finish the game in Chronological Mode, they will be rewarded with the options to dress Joel as Nathan Drake and Joel’s brother Tommy as Sam, Nathan’s brother from Uncharted 4.
This update is available as of today on PS5 and PC.
