I recently had a chat with Stephen A. Chang, who some might remember as Jesse from The Last of Us Part 2. Currently, he’s deep into filming for Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Though information about the new project is limited, even to him, we managed to extract a few tidbits regarding this exciting new intellectual property.
For twelve years now, Naughty Dog has launched a brand-new franchise with “The Last of Us.” Therefore, when they announced their new project, Intergalactic, it made quite an impact. It appears that something completely new is being developed by Sony’s most celebrated game studio.
Ever since its unexpected unveiling at The Game Awards 2024, there’s been an air of secrecy surrounding the project. It remains unclear when we might catch another glimpse of it, not to mention when it will finally be available for purchase. Interestingly enough, information about this project is as elusive for those eagerly anticipating its release as it is for the team working on it, who are intentionally kept in the dark to some extent.
We recently had a chat with actor Stephen A. Chang, who played Jesse in Naughty Dog’s last game and will also appear in an undisclosed role in their future project. Although we can’t share many details just yet, we did learn about the progress of the production and Chang’s personal thoughts on what fans might anticipate.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet actor talks production on Naughty Dog’s next game
Up at the beginning of our conversation, Chang shared that his work on Intergalactic was only recently initiated. “Last week,” he clarified, “I began working on a new project for Naughty Dog’s upcoming game.
As a gamer speaking about the latest project, I can tell you that the studio’s taking a tight-lipped approach this time. Just like Chang said, they’re playing things close to the vest after the leaks surrounding The Last of Us Part 2’s release. There’s a lot of bureaucratic red tape involved in something this big, but it seems that vital details are being withheld from the very people working on the game itself.
“What I know about it is probably as much as you guys, which I think is intentional.
A week before its release, I watched the trailer, not quite sure about what to anticipate since I wasn’t familiar with it. One of my friends who works on the game asked me if it was ‘The Last of Us Part 3’. We both had no clue what we were in for.
Chang radiated self-assurance as he conversed about aspects he was familiar with, even hinting playfully that “it’s bound to become a major sensation.
Instead of receiving complete screenplays, Chang described that some actors were provided with fragments or pieces. He mentioned this method was also used in the filming of “The Last of Us Part 2.”
“You’d film in sections. You’d get pieces of the script. Sometimes it’s not even chronological.”
Interestingly, it seemed that Chang initially wasn’t certain about the main character’s name, which might suggest that he hasn’t worked together with Jordan A. Mun of Tati Gabrielle in any filmed scenes – a possibility we can only guess at this point.
I’m really thrilled! I can’t wait to possibly receive another script and find out what happens next. Just like everyone else, I’m trying to make sense of things as they unfold.

Though specific details about his part are still unclear, examining scenes from the unveiling trailer offers some insight. The character played by Chang appears seated at a table with four others. If we accept the headline of a news clip placed nearby, this gathering seems to be a notorious criminal band called the Five Aces.
Included in the group is Colin Graves, depicted by Kumail Nanjiani, along with Tony Dalton, recognized for his role in Better Call Saul, and Ashley Scott, famously known as Maria from The Last of Us video games.
While working on my small project, I found myself thinking, ‘Wow, this is quite significant! I’m clearly the newest or least experienced person here,'” Chang chuckled.
