As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly wondering if there will be a third installment of The Last of Us. With the immense success of the first two games and the gripping HBO series, it’s only natural for us fans to anticipate more from this captivating franchise. However, Neil Druckmann, the chief at Naughty Dog, hinted that any potential third game would require something truly extraordinary to bring it to life.
He mentioned to ComicBook that his primary focus is on the TV series, recently renewed for a third season, as well as the game he’s overseeing, titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of another The Last of Us game; yet, he hasn’t given a definitive answer either.
At Naughty Dog, we’re currently engrossed in developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – a project we’ve been nurturing for quite some time now. It’s consuming all our efforts at present. I’m putting my heart and soul into these projects as if they were my last, which leads me to believe that there may not be any more after this. However, under the right circumstances and with everything falling perfectly into place, who knows what the future might hold?
Initially, Druckmann designed the narrative in The Last of Us to conclude decisively since he wasn’t certain about creating a sequel. However, the game turned out to be extremely popular, leading to Druckmann returning for The Last of Us: Part II. Notably, Naughty Dog was not obligated to produce a sequel as Sony, being the owner, has enough trust in Naughty Dog to make independent decisions.
Originally, we conceived a concept [for The Last of Us: Part II] that truly excited us. It was strong enough to invest numerous years into its development. We meticulously crafted the narrative and ultimately thought, “Yes, this story has reached its conclusion. This is the conclusive ending for this particular moment in our creative journey,” he expressed.
In essence, Druckmann has echoed a familiar sentiment since he’s already dismissed speculations about The Last of Us: Part III. He expressed that each game is treated as if it were his last creation, and for a potential third installment to materialize, the conditions would have to be exceptionally favorable.
2023 saw Naughty Dog shelving their multiplayer project for The Last of Us, titled ‘The Last of Us Online’. Subsequently, the studio confirmed they were working on at least two standalone games. While one, ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’, has been disclosed, the second title remains undisclosed. However, rumors circulate that ‘The Last of Us: Part III’ is currently being developed, with creative director Neil Druckmann hinting he already has a narrative in place for this potential sequel.
It seems that Intergalactic won’t come out before 2027 at the very least, which means fans probably won’t get their hands on a potential third installment of The Last of Us or any other future game in the series anytime soon. However, the second season of The Last of Us TV series is set to debut this Sunday, April 13.
