The Last of Us

Actress Bella Ramsey from HBO’s The Last of Us disclosed that she shut down her social media profiles ahead of the Season 2 premiere in order to dodge potential criticism.

HBO’s television series based on Naughty Dog’s renowned video games has been incredibly well-received, both by critics and audiences alike. As Season 2 continues, we can’t tear ourselves away, finding it an emotionally charged retelling that’s sure to leave you feeling overwhelmed.

In this live-action adaptation, Bella Ramsey takes the main role as Ellie. Known for her portrayal of the character during Season 1, the English actor garnered a lot of positive feedback for their performance. However, with an older version of Ellie to depict this time, there’s been quite a bit of controversy on social media regarding Ramsey’s physical appearance.

It transpired that the 21-year-old had been keenly anticipating this conversation. In fact, this topic had been a particular focus for them in the run-up to production, and they devoted extra effort to changing their appearance for it. Moreover, they attempted to circumvent this issue by staying off social media.

Bella Ramsey was “fixated” on Ellie’s appearance in The Last of Us Season 2

According to Ramsey, the filming process for Season 2 was incredibly challenging in numerous aspects, as she shared during her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Ramsey went through an intense regimen of physical exercise that encompassed combat sports such as boxing and jiu-jitsu, along with targeted muscle building at the gym using weight training. It’s said that even during filming, Ramsey was constantly working hard between takes. When not in front of the camera, they were involved in stunt practice instead.

This primarily stemmed from their strong desire to portray the character convincingly, with Ramsey acknowledging that there were noticeable differences when compared to the age-adjusted version of the character.

Ramsey expressed that he became very focused on how Ellie appears in the game, particularly her physique and muscular definition in her arms. However, he noted that he doesn’t resemble that image as his body type is different.

The showrunner, Craig Mazin, never imposed such expectations on Ramsey, they emphasized, yet it remained a significant “mental hurdle” for them to surmount, as they found it difficult not to compare themselves to a digitally-created model.

Approaching the debut of Season 2, Ramsey decided to step back from online platforms. They chose to disable their social media profiles to steer clear of discussions about their role in the newly released episodes.

Despite having contemplated this step for a while, with them occasionally expressing that they “never truly desired to be on social media,” the moment eventually arrived when it seemed fitting to withdraw from social media platforms.

It wasn’t a huge, dramatic event, but there was a small aspect of it that made me think about the upcoming second season of the show. Now that I’ve decided to stay away from Twitter and Reddit, everything is calm again.

It’s common knowledge among those involved with The Last of Us that fans can be quite intense online. Unfortunately, Laura Bailey, the original actress for the game character Abby, faced an overwhelming amount of hostility, even receiving death threats against her newborn child. In light of such events, Ramsey took a proactive approach to handle the situation in this particular case.
