The Insidious series will be back in 2026, so it’s a good time for fans to figure out the best way to watch the movies in order. Understanding the storyline—especially the mystery surrounding the ghostly dimension called the Further—will make the experience even better. The Insidious films primarily focus on this eerie realm, a sort of limbo where spirits and demons reside, hoping to take control of or pull people into their world.
These malicious spirits primarily target people who are psychic or can astral project, as they are more easily drawn into a dangerous realm known as the Further. The central characters in this horror series are Elise Rainier (played by Lin Shaye) and the Lambert family, headed by Josh (Patrick Wilson, known from The Conjuring), who face off against terrifying ghosts like the Red-Faced Demon (also called Lipstick-Face Demon) and the Bride in Black.
The Insidious films cover a period from the 1950s to 2020, exploring the terrifying nature of the spirit world—known as the Further—and how the power of its entities can blur the lines between it and our own reality.
How To Watch The Insidious Movies in Chronological Order
To truly understand the Insidious universe and its characters, it’s best to watch the movies in the order listed below, rather than by their release dates. This order will help you follow the story and mythology from the start.
Insidious: Chapter 3

Timeline: 2007
Insidious: Chapter 3 is a prequel that shows us how Elise Rainier, a psychic who becomes a key character in the series, first began her work. The film follows Elise and her team, Specs and Tucker, as they help a young girl trying to connect with her deceased mother.
Although Insidious: Chapter 3 isn’t as directly tied to the Lambert family’s story as the other films, it’s a significant installment because it clarifies the rules of The Further and how its spirits operate.
In Insidious: Chapter 3, Specs and Tucker are first shown as online mediums who run a website as a joke, pretending to investigate ghosts. The movie explains how this duo first met Elise and became her team.
What starts as a simple job soon becomes frightening when the group encounters real supernatural events. They join forces with Elise to resolve the situation, and ultimately decide to become a professional paranormal investigation team. This sets up their future adventures, including the case of the Lamberts, and also begins a dangerous conflict between Elise and a menacing red-faced demon.
Insidious: The Last Key

Timeline: 2010 (with 1950s flashbacks)
Insidious: The Last Key is a follow-up to Insidious: Chapter 3, continuing the story and exploring the origins of the main character, Elise, and her gift as a psychic.
A flashback in The Last Key showed that young Elise could talk to the dead, but she couldn’t control this ability. This led her to accidentally open a door to a demonic entity named Keyface, who tragically killed her mother. This deeply traumatic experience created her lasting connection to the spirit world and fueled her desire to help others facing similar struggles.
In 2010, Elise discovered her new case involving Ted Garza led her back to the house she grew up in, forcing her to confront painful memories and long-hidden family secrets. The film’s ending directly connects to the beginning of the first Insidious movie, where Elise receives a desperate call from Lorraine Lambert, asking for help with her son, Dalton.
This movie is significant because it reveals Elise’s history, which makes her return in the first Insidious film much more impactful. It changes how we see her – from an enigmatic figure to a relatable and inspiring hero that viewers will genuinely care about.
Insidious

Timeline: 2010
Insidious was the first film released in the series and centers on the Lambert family’s experiences in 2010.
Key events in this story – like Dalton falling into a coma with his spirit trapped, the frightening demon haunting the Lambert family and Elise, and the appearance of the mysterious Bride in Black – all become central to the larger story told throughout the series.
Let me tell you, the first Insidious really stuck with me, especially that ending. It was a total shock to see Josh possessed by The Bride in Black, and even more shocking to realize he was the one who accidentally killed Elise! It was a real cliffhanger, and honestly, it perfectly set up everything that happens in Insidious: Chapter 2. It left me immediately wanting to see what would happen next.
Insidious: Chapter 2

Timeline: 2010 (Flashbacks to 1986)
Insidious: Chapter 2 continues the story after the events of the first film and Elise’s death. It also flashes back to 1986, showing a young Josh’s first terrifying encounter with the Bride in Black.
It turned out young Elise had previously helped Josh deal with the Bride in Black’s haunting back in 1986. She used hypnosis to make him forget he could project his spirit into the Further. This forgotten ability was then passed on to Josh’s son, Dalton, and ultimately led to the events of the first movie.
Even though Elise is gone, she continues to play a key role in the story. She becomes a stronger force within the Further, assisting Josh and Dalton in escaping and joining forces to finally defeat the Bride and Black. The film’s ending shows that Elise was the one who originally helped Josh and Dalton suppress their memories of traveling to the Further, allowing them to live normal lives. However, Insidious: The Red Door makes it clear that the haunting isn’t over.
Insidious: The Red Door

Timeline: 2019
Insidious: The Red Door picks up the story in 2019, nearly ten years after the Lambert family faced the terrifying world of the Further.
The movie centers on a now-adult Dalton as he navigates college life. When he unknowingly recreates a drawing of the Red Door in art class, it triggers the supernatural events we see in the present day, bringing back his childhood trauma. Meanwhile, Josh delves into his family’s past, discovering a history of astral projection, which ultimately leads him towards another journey into the spirit world, known as the Further.
Knowing he could permanently seal the Red Door, Dalton ventured into the dangerous realm known as the Further, hoping to stop others from becoming trapped there. Unfortunately, his attempt failed when he encountered the terrifying Lipstick-Face Demon. Meanwhile, Josh, having recovered his memories, bravely followed him into the Further to rescue his son.
With help from the spirit of Josh’s father, Josh, his son, and grandson were able to escape The Further, bringing the Lambert family together again and finally bringing peace to their story.
