‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Adds Lili Taylor as Mags

Lili Taylor has been chosen to play the role of Mags in Lionsgate’s movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling book “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” She will be working alongside previously announced actors, including Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee.

Previously on screen as Mags in “Catching Fire,” actress Lynn Cohen played the role of a former victor from the Hunger Games who now serves as a mentor for District 12.

In the movie “Catching Fire,” Lynn Cohen was the one portraying Mags, a character who used to win the Hunger Games and is now guiding residents of District 12 as their mentor.

Or simply:
Lynn Cohen’s character, Mags, from “Catching Fire” was a former Hunger Games winner turned District 12 mentor.

Taylor is a three-time Emmy nominee, who will soon appear in the second season of “Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again” on Netflix, as well as in “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” You can also catch her in the mystery drama “Outer Range,” which streams on Amazon. This spring, Taylor published her first book, titled “Turning to Birds,” a heartfelt tribute to birdwatching and finding tranquility in surprising locations.

On November 20, 2026, the movie version of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is set to hit theaters. Francis Lawrence will be at the helm as director, with Billy Ray penning the screenplay adaptation. The producers will be Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson from Color Force, while Cameron MacConomy will serve as an executive producer.

The story “Sunrise on the Reaping,” published on March 18th, takes us back to the world of Panem, specifically twenty-four years prior to the events in “The Hunger Games.” This narrative begins at the dawn of the day when the fifty-first Hunger Games were drawn, also recognized as the Second Quarter Quell.

As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that “Sunrise on the Reaping” has truly made an impactful debut! In its inaugural week alone, this blockbuster smashed records, selling an impressive 1.5 million copies across the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The U.S. market accounted for a staggering 1.2 million of those sales, outperforming “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” by a factor of two in its first week and leaving “Mockingjay” in the dust with three times as many sales! To put it into perspective, the collective box office earnings of the five films in this franchise have reached an astounding $3.3 billion. This is certainly a series that’s here to stay!

Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien are managing the project at Lionsgate, while Robert Melnik handled the negotiations on behalf of the studio.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been signed with Independent Artist Group and Untitled Entertainment, and the exciting news about my casting was originally broken by Deadline!
