The Harry Potter TV Show Casting Is Getting Messy

Back in April, Max unveiled some of the main actors for its upcoming high-budget TV version of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, including John Lithgow portraying Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu taking on the role of Snape. This production aims to recount the familiar events from the books and films that were released not too long ago, with a focus on staying true to the original stories. Fans are especially excited about the prospect of Ludo Bagman appearing in the Goblet of Fire season. However, while fans appreciate Lithgow’s portrayal of Dumbledore, there has been a surge of critical comments on HBO’s social media platforms regarding Essiedu’s casting as Snape. It appears that the issue lies not in his youth or good looks but rather, a substantial change to the character that they have pointed out.

Original: The first comment on a Max post about “The Last of Us” was “Snape is white.”

A different comment on a “coming soon to HBO” post was “Adam Driver for Snape, please,” followed by the Brazilian flag.

On the “coming soon” announcement for HBO, one person asked that Adam Driver be cast as Snape in an upcoming production, and added a Brazilian flag to their comment.

3. Original: Rehearsal preview? “Recast Snape.”

The rehearsal preview is asking for a change of actor in the role of Snape.

4. Original: Celtics documentary teaser? “Please listen to fans from all over the world. Respect Snape and Recast.” (Respect… Snape?)

In the trailer for the upcoming Celtics documentary, it is being requested that the creators pay attention to the wishes of fans worldwide, respect the character of Snape, and consider recasting him.

5. Original: Companion is now streaming on Max? “#fixsnape”

Now that the companion series is available for streaming on Max, fans are using the hashtag #fixsnape to express their desire for a change in the Snape character’s casting.

The controversy surrounding Essiedu’s role as Snape has expanded on platforms like TikTok and Reddit, where critics have attempted to clarify their concerns about the decision to cast a Black actor in this iconic Harry Potter character. One user explained their stance, saying “I don’t mind the recent trend of racial swapping in Hollywood roles at all. I was fully on board with a Black Commissioner Gordon in Batman and Nick Fury in the MCU. However, when it comes to Snape, I believe this situation is unique… Representing Snape as a black actor could lead some viewers to attribute many of his decisions and experiences to racial issues rather than just who he fundamentally is. This user even drew a parallel with the idea of casting Ryan Gosling as the Black Panther.

It’s possible that altering Snape’s race could transform James Potter’s early hostility towards him from typical schoolyard bullying to something more racially motivated. Throughout the books, Snape’s views can be seen as narrow-minded, as he both looks down upon and respects Harry’s mother Lily, who is a Mudblood (a derogatory term for a person of non-pure magical blood). Although race plays a role in the Harry Potter universe and the wizarding world, it remains unclear how it affects broader racial concepts. However, delving into these aspects could be interesting for the show. Instead, most Instagram comments are focusing on the significance of Snape being white. A few comments have also included the Brazilian flag, suggesting a potential Brazilian Snape, which is an intriguing idea.

Upcoming Harry Potter series is facing criticism due to J.K. Rowling’s ongoing comments against the transgender community, and the backlash against Essiedu isn’t helping either. If both fans who are turning away from Rowling and those who support her but prefer different casting decide to stop watching, who will remain as an audience? While flooding social media typically doesn’t alter a TV show’s course – like Anne With an E for example – perhaps there’s still time for Essiedu or other potential actors to reconsider their roles.
