‘The Great Ambition,’ Biopic About Italy’s Late Communist Party Leader Enrico Berlinguer, Scores International Sales (EXCLUSIVE)

Fandango Film Sales from Italy has secured several deals for Andrea Segre’s movie “The Great Ambition,” a biographical film about the late Italian politician Enrico Berlinguer, who served as secretary of the largest Communist Party in Western Europe during the 1970s.

The unexpectedly relevant movie, produced by Rome-based independent studio Vivo film (known for “Nico, 1988” and “Le Quattro Volte”), debuted as the opener at the Rome Film Festival last year and subsequently garnered success in Italian cinemas, earning over $4 million so far – with more to come, making it one of the top ten local box office draws of last year.

The well-known Italian actor Elio Germano (shown), who received the best actor award at Cannes for his role in “Our Life” with Daniele Luchetti, portrays Enrico Berlinguer on screen. Berlinguer was the leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1972 until his passing in 1984. He came very close to bringing the PCI into power during the Italian parliamentary elections of 1976.

Even when it appeared that no progress could be made, Enrico Berlinguer refused to give up. He was the leader in the 1970s of one of the largest Communist parties in the Western world, boasting over 1.7 million card-carrying members and more than 12 million supporters who shared a common goal: to establish socialism within a democratic framework.

The text goes on to say, “Berlinguer and the Italian Communist Party (PCI) spent five years trying to take control during the Cold War era, when the world was split into two, by engaging in dialogues with the Christian Democrats. They almost managed to alter the course of history but fell just short.

Fandango has distributed “The Great Ambition” to France (Nour), Spain (Filmin), Portugal (Risi), Switzerland (Cineworx), Brazil (Imovision), Greece (Weirdwave), Australia/New Zealand (Palace), Bulgaria (yet to be determined), and former Yugoslavia (McF Megacom). They are currently in talks to finalize deals for Benelux and additional territories.

In an interview with EbMaster, Marta Donzelli from Vivo Film expressed her surprise at the movie’s widespread appeal in Italy. While they anticipated the film would resonate with older audiences, she was taken aback to discover that its main driving force behind its success had been the youth demographic who have enthusiastically embraced the film and generated a buzz around it.

Donzelli explained her viewpoint, stating that Berlinguer represents dedicating one’s life to improving the world as part of a shared vision. She also suggested that the movie’s popularity among young viewers in Italy could potentially resonate with global audiences.

Donzelli pointed out that several aspects of “The Great Ambition” mirror current trends in global politics.

She stated that the movie illustrates the involvement of both the Soviet Union and the United States in an effort to influence a democratic movement aimed at taking control of the biggest political party in the Western world. Despite appearing somewhat outdated, it carries a powerful message that resonates with us today.

In its global release, “The Great Ambition” has been featured at the Göteberg Film Festival in Sweden and is now part of the Cinema Made in Italy showcase in London. It’s anticipated to appear in competition at the Beijing International Film Festival, which could potentially lead to its distribution in China.
