‘The Graduates,’ Executive Produced by Chloé Zhao and John Cho, Gets Theatrical Release From The Future of Film Is Female (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that “The Graduates” has piqued my interest like no other debut film in recent memory. Having witnessed the evolution of independent cinema, I can confidently assert that this coming-of-age drama is a breath of fresh air in today’s cinematic landscape.

Independent film distributor “The Future of Film is Female” plans to premiere the directorial first-time effort of Hannah Peterson, titled “The Graduates,” in movie theaters nationwide, beginning November 1.

Caryn Coleman’s The Future of Film is Female initiative will start its distribution collaboration with Metrograph, based in New York. The chosen distributor aims to launch various independently-made films directed by female or nonbinary directors, with unique distribution strategies tailored for each movie.

The movie titled ‘The Graduates’ features Mina Sundwall, John Cho, Alex Hibbert, Yasmeen Fletcher, Ewan Manley, Maria Dizzia and Kelly O’Sullivan in its cast. This drama about growing up follows the story of a young woman portrayed by Sundwall, who is on the brink of graduating high school following a devastating incident.

The film debuted at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, where it received the award for Best Cinematography, given to Director of Photography Carolina Costa.

Peterson is responsible for writing, directing, and editing ‘The Graduates’. This movie is overseen by executive producers Chloé Zhao, Jessamine Burgum (CEO/Founder of Pinky Promise), Kara Durrett (President of Pinky Promise), Meena Harris (Founder and CEO of Phenomenal Media), Juliet Liu, and Cho, who also acts in the film. Josh Peters, Saba Zerehi, Taylor Shung, and Jessamine Burgum are the producers.

Peterson’s brief film titled “Champ” was showcased as part of the screening lineup by The Future of Film is Female in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art.

Coleman, President of The Future of Film is Female, expressed, “In recent years, many worthy independent films haven’t secured distribution, which we believe calls for a change in our distribution strategy towards specialized distribution. We are promoting a film programming-focused approach to distribution that reinforces our belief that visibility, representation, and audience connection are vital for enduring transformation in the movie industry. Moreover, we genuinely care about this cause.

Peterson expressed his enthusiasm by saying, “I am absolutely thrilled to collaborate with The Future of Film is Female on the release of ‘The Graduates.’ Caryn has been a steadfast supporter throughout my entire career, so it’s particularly significant that we embark on this new venture together. I can hardly wait to unveil the outstanding talent of this exceptional team.

The arrangement for the movie was handled by Caryn Coleman from The Future of Film is Female, in collaboration with Cinetic Media and WME, who represented the film’s creators.
