To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Richard Donner-directed film written by Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg is moving to a new streaming platform, Max, in May. The film features Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Key Huy Quan, and will be available for streaming on Max starting May 1.
A band of unlikely heroes living in The Goondocks embark on a thrilling quest to unearth hidden treasure after stumbling upon an old map. Recently, Warner Bros. announced that they are actively working on reviving the classic films “Goonies” and creating a new installment for “Gremlins.” According to Pam Abdy, Chair/CEO of Warner B Bros. Pictures, “We’re incredibly enthusiastic about Amblin partnering with Chris Columbus to bring fresh stories to the Gremlins and Goonies franchises.
For quite some time, whispers of a new Goonies movie have been going around, but only recently has it been officially confirmed. In February, news emerged about this potential sequel, but details regarding a possible narrative or plotline are still scarce. It remains unclear which characters from the 1985 film will reappear in the upcoming sequel.
Original Cast Members Would Love To Return For The Goonies Sequel
Davi expressed his desire to reprise his role as Jake Fratelli in a possible revival of the beloved film, The Goonies. He mused, “Perhaps they’ll bring back Jake Fratelli or the Fratelli brothers in some form; only time will tell.” Excited about the prospect, he added, “I find it intriguing because The Goonies continues to resonate with people worldwide, and its cult status has transcended beyond the screen.
In the wake of winning an Oscar for his role in the 2023 film “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, Quan expressed his desire to reprise his character for a sequel. He shared, “I adore that movie so deeply. It ranks among the most extraordinary experiences of my life. The prospect of revisiting that character and embarking on another thrilling adventure with my fellow Goonies is truly exhilarating.
Previously mentioned, the actor shared that being part of “Goonies” turned out to be unexpectedly challenging: “I found Goonies to be quite serendipitous,” he stated. “When I walked in, they apparently did a double-take because of my last name, asking, ‘Are you James Brolin’s son? And do you want to act?’“, referring to his well-known father, James Brolin, who has won an Emmy for acting.
Instead of favoritism, they seemed to challenge him by saying, “Go on, prove it.” Brolin explained he later had meetings with Donner and Spielberg. “I fit the role perfectly. When you consider Sean Astin or the type of film it was, I had a bit of a rebellious edge, but also a jock-like charm, and I was in great physical condition. So they thought, that’s the man. I went back six times, just to confirm, and then I landed the part.
The Goonies debuts on Max on May 1.
