Ever since the Golden Globes winners were revealed at the Beverly Hilton last weekend, people in the film industry have been discussing surprising choices, identifying emerging patterns, and making predictions for the upcoming Oscars. With awards season nearing its end, there’s a lot of excitement in the air.
The Golden Globes often throw some unexpected winners into the mix, which shakes up the Oscars race. After the Golden Globes, frontrunners for major awards aren’t always so clear-cut, because the Globes sometimes highlight less predictable choices. This makes the entire awards season more exciting to watch.
Following the Golden Globes, One Battle After Another is now the frontrunner to win the Best Picture Oscar, a prediction that’s held true since the beginning of awards season. While the Globes didn’t make every Oscar category clear, the biggest takeaway isn’t necessarily who will win, but rather the increased visibility for all the nominated films and actors.
Stellan Skarsgård Won The Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe
Many felt Renate Reinsve deserved an Oscar nomination for her role in The Worst Person in the World, and her omission from the 2022 Best Actress category was a major surprise. She had already won the award for the same performance at the Cannes Film Festival, but didn’t receive recognition from other key awards shows like the Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The Golden Globes initially overlooked the film entirely, sparking criticism about a lack of diversity in their nominations. Although this didn’t excuse the omission of such a noteworthy international film, the Globes later recognized Joachim Trier’s follow-up movie, Sentimental Value, with several nominations in 2025. Trier previously directed The Worst Person in the World.
Although it seemed unlikely he would win given recent trends, Stellan Skarsgård’s Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor has shaken up the Oscar race. His victory shows that critically acclaimed performances in non-English language films are now being considered alongside those in English-language films.
Wagner Moura Won The Best Actor Golden Globe For Drama
The film Sinners was a strong contender for Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars, alongside One Battle After Another, but lost ground after Hamnet won the Golden Globe. It was also widely expected to win Best Actor in a Drama, particularly since horror films were the most popular of the year.
Everyone expected Michael B. Jordan to win, but Wagner Moura took home the award for his role in The Secret Agent. The film also won Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe, showing that international movies are now being recognized as strong contenders in major award shows, right alongside popular Hollywood films.
A Record Number of International Films Were Nominated This Year
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about what the 2026 Golden Globes seem to be signaling. It feels like Hollywood is finally starting to truly embrace international films – movies made outside of the US, and even those not in English. For years, it’s been frustrating to see incredible films from around the world overlooked during awards season, and it’s great to see that potentially changing. It’s about time these deserving films got the recognition they deserve!
This year, four out of the twelve films nominated for Best Picture were made outside of the United States. The film Sentimental Value received four nominations, and Joachim Trier was nominated for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident also earned nominations in the directing and writing categories. Additionally, actors from No Other Choice and The Secret Agent were nominated for Best Actor.

The Golden Globes and Oscars have always shown some appreciation for international films, but recent wins have been particularly groundbreaking. In 2020, Parasite made history as the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture, and last year, Emilia Pérez continued this trend, also winning Best Picture and changing how the awards show views films not made in English.
The film took home the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy, making it the first foreign-language movie to ever win that award. It also received more nominations than any other international film in history. Zoe Saldaña was recognized with the Best Supporting Actress award, and this year’s wins show that diverse representation in acting is becoming a lasting reality, not just a temporary fad.
Timothée Chalamet Is Still Most Likely To Win The Best Actor Oscar

The decision to award him at the Critics’ Choice Awards, rather than Michael B. Jordan, immediately caused controversy and even accusations of racial bias against the judges. However, Timothée Chalamet is currently the frontrunner for the Best Actor Oscar, and he’s just as deserving of the award as Wagner Moura or Michael B. Jordan.
Timothée Chalamet, as a rising star, can sometimes come across as conceited, and some might feel his win isn’t deserved, especially considering other actors who don’t have the same level of publicity. However, he put in as much effort as anyone else in his performance. Ultimately, the award itself won’t affect how respected international films are during future awards seasons.
