The Game Boy Camera Is Making An Unofficial Comeback On Smartphones

Over the long life of Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld, it boasted some intriguing accessories, and now a developer plans to revive its famous camera with a contemporary flair. Riley Testut, creator of the Delta emulator for iOS, unveiled the standalone app called Delta Camera, which aspires to replicate the distinctive look of the Game Boy Camera.

Starting later this year, and currently exclusive to Testut’s Patreon members, I’ve got my hands on an incredible app that takes me back to the late ’90s! It lets you snap monochrome, low-resolution photos, but don’t let the vintage aesthetic fool you – it comes equipped with all the features a contemporary camera app offers. You can tweak exposure, brightness, and contrast settings for that perfect retro look. It’s like having a time machine straight to the heart of the 90s!

Presenting our latest creation – the Delta Camera! 📸 This is a specialized app designed exclusively for capturing photos using the Game Boy Camera, offering functions similar to those found in contemporary camera apps ☀ Manual adjustments for exposure and zoom 🤳 Plus, it supports Camera Control. Expected to launch fully later this year, but right now, you can try it out in its beta phase! It’s available immediately for all our esteemed Patrons at patreon.com/posts/introd…

The Game Boy Camera was quite intriguing upon its release, as digital photography was still in its early stages at the time and it predated smartphones with integrated cameras by several years. This camera was part of a cartridge that could be inserted into the Game Boy console, and it boasted a 128 x 128-pixel CMOS sensor capable of capturing images in a four-color grayscale palette.

If you fancied a bit of extravagance, there was also a printer available that could work alongside your camera – creatively named the Game Boy Printer. However, its output quality might not be top-notch as it relies on thermal paper for prints.

Over the years since its launch, the Game Boy Camera has gained a dedicated fanbase among photography enthusiasts, with one devotee even modifying it by fitting a self-made lens.
