The Fantasmas Cast Has Cruel Intentions

Occasionally, when we’re feeling low, we seek solace in a figure, symbolically represented as Sarah Michelle Gellar, a brunette with a distinctive charm, who carries a rosary filled with substances reminiscent of cocaine. On April 7 at the DGA New York Theater, Film Independent hosted a live reading of “Cruel Intentions,” directed by Julio Torres and featuring some of his regular collaborators and co-stars from “Fantasmas.” The cast comprised Justice Smith as Sebastian (originally portrayed by Ryan Phillippe), Martine Gutierrez as Kathryn (Gellar), Cristin Milioti as Annette (Reese Witherspoon), Julia Fox as Cecile (Selma Blair), and Jaboukie Young-White as Ronald (Sean Patrick Thomas). James Scully, Tomás Matos, and Amy Sedaris played multiple roles, but their standout performances were as Blaine (Joshua Jackson), Greg (Eric Mabius), and Mrs. Caldwell (Christine Baranski) respectively. Spike Einbinder narrated the event alongside Torres, and notably, closed the show by reassuring the audience that Kathryn and Sebastian’s relationship as stepsiblings was acceptable, a subtle jab at Mike White.

With only Smith and Milioti yet to feature on Fantasmas, there was a noticeable void in Torres’s HBO series cast – the absence of Bibo, the robot secretary who dreams of acting. Despite his claims of potentially leading the cast as Sebastian if not filming The White Lotus season four, Bibo was conspicuously missing from the lineup. Curiously, Torres hinted that Bibo could have taken the lead role. However, we now know which Fantasmas actors would play roles in Cruel Intentions, but what about the reverse? I asked some of the cast who they’d like to see from the 1999 romantic thriller step into the bizarre world of Fantasmas instead.

Torres made the statement “All of them!” prior to selecting an outstanding character. He mentioned Sarah Michelle Gellar, particularly as a brunette portraying an evil character, had a significant impact on him. He expressed his wish to see her return to that wicked role again. Einbinder, playing Carl in Fantasmas, preferred the other half of the scheming stepsiblings and suggested a romantic or seductive encounter between Sebastian and Bibo. For Bibo’s sake, he desired justice. As for Scully’s preference: “Joshua Jackson is who I want, and he can do anything he desires.

Because Sedaris recently acted alongside Jackson in a “Doctor Odyssey” episode, there could be an opportunity for them to collaborate again. However, unlike Jackson who sported bleached-blond hair, Scully had already committed to reprising his role as Mary’s Teacher in the Broadway production of “Oh, Mary!” the following night. Speaking about returning to this role, Scully expressed that it was a matter of waiting until he steps onto the stage and sees Cole Escola, after which he finds the rest of the job relatively easy, now that he is deeply infatuated with Cole Escola.

In this production, Matos gave an outstanding performance as “the Gregster,” a closeted jock, while Fox and Gutierrez recreated the famous kiss between Blair and Gellar from Cruel Intentions. When asked about the scene, Fox said, “When I watched that when I was 10 or 11, I felt something.” She didn’t elaborate further. The reading also included a cross filled with cocaine, small sunglasses worn by Milioti as Annette in the final scene of the movie, and a live performance of “Bitter Sweet Symphony” from Boy Radio. Unfortunately, Philippe’s bare backside was not part of the presentation.
