The Expanse: Osiris Devs Talk Mass Effect’s Influence, Giving Players More Choices

The video game titled “The Expanse: Osiris Reborn,” developed by Owlcat Games, is an action-RPG set in space, inspired by both the TV series and novels of The Expanse by James S. A. Corey (also known as Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). When its trailer was released this summer, it quickly drew comparisons to Mass Effect. However, Alexander Mishulin, the game’s creative director, has admitted that Mass Effect played a part in the development of Osiris Reborn. The team intends to chart their own course instead of replicating the methods used in Mass Effect.

According to Mishulin, the game is quite distinct from Mass Effect in several aspects. For starters, the narrative structure is different. There will be more choices and consequences involved, aiming to ensure that players have a great deal of control over the game’s progression.

To illustrate, Mishulin pointed out that unlike in some games where players are confined to predefined character trajectories such as paragon or renegade, this game allows for more flexibility. Players can choose their character’s origins – be it Earth, Mars, or the Belt. This decision will influence the reactions and relationships of non-player characters (NPC) and companions towards them throughout the gameplay.

The game’s narrative unfolds within the initial 2.5 seasons of “The Expanse,” placing you in the role as commander of the galaxy’s most sophisticated vessel. Your character, who is a twin, shares this ship with their sibling. Although your decisions may vary, the relationship between the twins can sometimes be strained due to differing opinions on the optimal course of action.

As a gamer, I’m excited about the various romantic possibilities aboard the ship in Osiris Reborn. However, what really sets it apart is the emphasis on streamlined user interfaces and innovative gameplay mechanics, rather than simply mimicking the style of Mass Effect.

Owlcat Games has not announced a release date for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as of now, but the game will be playable on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers. Simultaneously, the studio is working on Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy as well.
