‘The Expanse’ Creators Set ‘Captive’s War’ TV Series at Amazon, Launch New Media Company Expanding Universe (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned space-opera aficionado who’s spent countless hours navigating the cosmos through the lens of various sci-fi series, I must say that the announcement of “The Captive’s War” TV series by the team behind Amazon’s beloved “The Expanse” has me positively thrilled!

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the brilliant minds behind the critically acclaimed sci-fi masterpiece, “The Expanse,” have embarked on a new cinematic journey at Amazon MGM Studios. This fresh series is an adaptation of the book series, “The Captive’s War.” Intriguingly, this project is part of a strategic collaboration between Amazon and the multi-platform media company, Expanding Universe, a new venture by the creator of “The Expanse.

Established by “The Expanse” showrunner Naren Shankar, director Breck Eisner from the series, and renowned authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who write under the name James S.A. Corey for their “Expanse” book series), Expanding Universe is preparing to reveal more upcoming projects shortly.

The “Captive’s War” television show is based on a planned book trilogy of the same title by James S.A. Corey. The first book, “The Mercy of Gods,” which made it onto the New York Times bestseller list, was released in August.

In a future where multiple galactic empires and alien societies exist, the narrative of “The Captive’s War” unfolds. This captivating story takes its inspiration from the biblical Book of Daniel and revolves around a band of prisoners who emerge from the devastation of a cataclysmic event to dismantle their oppressor’s society from within. It is an extraordinary saga that explores the profound impact of individuality in a repressive regime.

In ‘The Captive’s War’, Shankar takes on multiple roles including executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Alongside him, Abraham and Franck are set to contribute as writers, while Eisner will be the director.

The project signifies a reuniting of the producers and Amazon, having previously collaborated on “The Expanse” that spanned over six seasons, with the initial three airing on Syfy and the latter three streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Eisner stated that ‘The Captive’s War’ is an ideal starting point for our mission at Expanding Universe, which involves crafting science fiction stories with grandiose universe-building and captivating plots. Our aim is to create content suitable for a variety of platforms such as film, gaming, and literature within the realm of entertainment.

In ‘The Expanse’, we constructed an intricate, engaging world populated by compelling characters and heart-pounding narratives – all while keeping costs reasonable,” Shankar explained. “Now, we’re leveraging this knowledge to delve into fresh storytelling realms and mediums.

Franck mentioned that ‘The Expanse’ started off as a concept intended for a video game, evolved into a role-playing game, then a book, and eventually made its way to the screen as a series. Later on, it returned to the gaming world as well. This journey, in essence, mirrors the path our expanding universe is taking when it comes to developing new projects.

As a film enthusiast myself, I’m thrilled to share that our past achievements have caught the attention of some captivating content: original scripts, adaptations based on other authors’ works, and even iconic intellectual properties that would be an absolute joy to reinterpret for today’s audience. If we succeed, we’ll have the chance to introduce a new generation to the wonders of science fiction on the big screen.
