As a long-time fan of the Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 series, I cannot hide my excitement over the latest update to the New Horizons mod. With more than 20 years of gaming experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless games come and go, but few have managed to retain such a dedicated and active community as this one.
After over two decades, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 – Yuri’s Revenge continues to receive backing from modders. The most recent example is the unveiling of New Horizons project version 14-B, a widely-used mod for the game’s second installment.
In this version, there are several novel features and modifications. The most significant change is the introduction of “Hardcore Mode.” This mode limits factions’ access to advanced technologies, such as Prism for the Allies and Tesla for the Soviets, instead providing more realistic alternatives. The intention behind Hardcore mode is to revive classic skirmishes akin to the original Red Alert while benefiting from the enhancements of the sequel. Additionally, the designer has incorporated various new elements, including enhanced choices for constructing base reinforcements. The creator drew motivation from “Warzone 2100,” and as an extra feature, the game’s soundtrack from that title is available as an optional selection.

In Hardcore Mode and beyond, this mod introduces a fresh element: amphibian-like units that can move smoothly over both land and water.
As a devoted fan of Red Alert 2, I’m thrilled about the New Horizons mod that brings significant improvements while preserving the unique essence of the original game. The developers have meticulously revamped various aspects to boost realism in gameplay, all the while keeping the distinct flavor of Red Alet 2. They’ve even added a new campaign and an abundance of standalone maps for both AI and multiplayer battles. Plus, it’s compatible with CNCNet – a fan-created network system that brings back the game’s full online functionality.
Over the past few months, New Horizons has seen significant progress. We witnessed the launch of update 14 in May, introducing an exciting new mission to the ongoing storyline. Subsequently, around autumn, the game was enriched with a survival mode set in a chilling and terrifying environment.
