As a long-time Disney enthusiast and nostalgia hoarder, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and confusion about the upcoming revival of “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to see the Russo family back on our screens, but the decision to focus on Justin instead of Alex or even Max leaves me scratching my head.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got some exciting news to share! After all these years, it’s finally me, the eldest boy, who gets to be part of something truly magical – the continuation of the “Wizards of Waverly Place” series! Now, don’t get me wrong, Alex still gets to announce the title, but I can’t wait for everyone to hear it: “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place”!
What’s it about, and who’s in the cast?
In a different turn of events, as I, a movie enthusiast, have come to understand, a new story unfolds about Justin, who, unlike the original timeline, has relinquished his wizard powers following an enigmatic mishap at the prestigious WizTech, a school of magic, not technology. This narrative deviates from our previous knowledge since the initial series concluded with Justin retaining his magical abilities. As per official descriptions, Justin, now an adult, has opted for a mundane, mortal existence. However, when Alex introduces him to a formidable young wizard named Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), he is called upon to guide her. Simultaneously, he must manage his daily life and protect the destiny of the Wizard World.
In the original, Billie Eilish is depicted as the main character, an unexpected choice given that Selena Gomez’s portrayal of Alex propelled her to stardom and defined her for teenagers worldwide. However, due to her busy schedule transforming into Linda Ronstadt, she wouldn’t have the time to don her old costumes. Instead, we follow Max, the heir of a sandwich shop played by Jake T. Austin, who could have been intriguing. But instead, we stay with a former wizard, who seems content to abandon his magical ways. In this adaptation, Justin doesn’t share a relationship with Juliet; his partner is named Giada (Mimi Gianopulos). Could we perhaps invent a new enchantment to breathe some excitement into the forthcoming series: Couldn’t this show be any softer? Bring back Bridget Mendler. There’s still time to include her, as suggested by the first-look photo below. Perhaps we can concoct a fresh charm to infuse a bit more energy into the upcoming production: “Bring Back Bridget Mendler’s Magic Touch!”
What’s it looking like?

At D23 on August 9th, the Russos reappeared with a sneak peek teaser that included Alex’s witty remarks and a fresh, sassy teenager named Billie pushing Justin’s limits. In classic Disney Channel style, their new home boasts ample space – could they possibly be residing in New York City anymore? The storyline unfolds as Billie adjusts to her magical abilities and tries to use them for more than just making burritos, causing a mix of high-spirited mischief.
Who else is involved?
Veterans Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, known for their work on Raven’s Home, are penning the show. They will also serve as executive producers alongside Raven-Symoné, Sabrina Carpenter, and Gary Marsh (from Descendants: The Rise of Red). On another note, Andy Fickman, famously known for directing She’s the Man, will helm multiple episodes.
When is it coming out?
The manufacturing process will kick off in April, right here in Los Angeles. By the end of this year, you’ll be able to catch “Wizards” on both the Disney Channel and Disney+.
