The recent Elder Scrolls Online presentations were a welcome change of pace. Zenimax has been much more open and honest with players about upcoming plans to fix problems and move beyond the predictable yearly chapter releases. While Bethesda is usually very careful with its public messaging, it’s been refreshing to hear developers speak frankly and address concerns, which has been a positive step for this otherwise fantastic MMORPG.
Before the recent introduction of Tamriel Tomes – essentially battle passes – Zenimax had already shown a tendency towards potentially exploitative microtransactions. Back in 2016, they added ‘Crown Crates’ – loot boxes – to the game. These crates encouraged players to spend money for a small chance at winning desirable items like mounts or cosmetics, though most of the time players only received things like dyes or potions. While the developers did later allow players to earn ‘Seals of Endeavor’ through gameplay to directly purchase crate contents, the addition of these practices still caused concern about the game becoming more focused on ongoing, live-service monetization.
It turns out the initial concerns were unfounded. Tamriel Tomes offer a great way to earn rewards on the free track – and unlike older daily reward systems, there’s no limit to what you can get. They also include worthwhile premium items like Crown Crates, making them a well-designed battle pass. However, the real strength of Tamriel Tomes lies in their engaging challenge system.
Battle Pass Challenges Are Perfect For An MMORPG

The Elder Scrolls Online has always offered daily quests, but its Tamriel Tome challenges – which are updated seasonally and weekly – focus on specific areas like Hew’s Bane, the Gold Coast, and Wrothgar. As is common in online games, players tend to move to newer content, leaving older zones less active. These challenges encourage players to revisit those original areas, defeat bosses, explore public dungeons, and complete delves.
Popular areas like the Kvatch arena, Wrothgar dungeons, and the cities of Hew’s Bane are bustling with players once more. While challenges and reward systems are common in many ongoing online games—like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Marvel Rivals—introducing them to The Elder Scrolls Online has cleverly encouraged players to revisit older parts of the game world, bringing those areas back to life in a really satisfying way.
As a long-time player, I remember the only way old areas ever felt alive again was when guilds organized events to bring everyone back. It was always a really cool, player-driven thing!
I’m excited about future Tamriel Tomes not for the rewards themselves, but for what areas of the game they might focus on improving. It would be fantastic to revisit places like the Alik’r Desert, Vvardenfell, or Coldharbour and experience them with the immersive feel of a classic MMO.
Tamriel Tomes could have been just another game designed to constantly ask for more money, but thankfully, they signal the end of ESO’s practice of pressuring players with limited-time offers and fear of missing out.
Now, instead of limited-time events, we’re offering battle passes that you can progress through at your own pace and the Gold Coast Bazaar. This lets you buy rewards from past events using a new currency you earn just by playing and completing the battle pass. The challenges are a bonus – if you missed an event when it was live, you can still experience it and earn the rewards. Everyone has a chance to get everything they want.
