‘The Crow’ Original Director Roasts the Reboot After It Flopped at the Box Office: ‘I Thought It Was a Cynical Cash Grab. Not Much Cash to Grab It Seems’

As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic masterpieces, I must admit that the latest reboot of “The Crow” has left me with a peculiar sense of satisfaction. Not because I delight in the downfall of any creative endeavor, but rather because it seems the universe has vindicated the spirit of Brandon Lee, who gave his life to bring this iconic character to life.

The remake of Lionsgate’s “The Crow” has failed at the box office, earning only $4.6 million against a production budget of $50 million. Not surprisingly, filmmaker Alex Proyas – who directed the original 1994 “The Crow” movie and lost his lead actor Brandon Lee during its production – seems quite pleased by this outcome, expressing his joy on his Facebook page over the reboot’s box office failure.

“Proyas commented that the remake felt like a money-grabbing scheme. However, judging by its poor box office performance, it doesn’t seem there was much money to be had.”

The director has also expressed unfavorable opinions about the remake, with one critic labeling “The Crow” remake as “the worst film of the year.” In response to this review, Proyas commented: “This is the review we’ve all been anticipating. It feels like beating a dead horse now, so I think I’ll stop here…until another amusing one surfaces.”

Proyas has voiced his disapproval of the “The Crow” remake since its initial trailer was released in March, contending that the original film’s legacy should be preserved untarnished rather than being overhauled with a modern adaptation. The upcoming version features Bill Skarsgard, who is known for his roles in “It” and “John Wick 4”, as the main character.

“I find no pleasure in observing negativity towards other filmmakers’ work, as I did when noticing the dislikes on the reboot’s trailer,” Proyas expressed on social media in March. “I believe the cast and crew had nothing but good intentions, just like we all do for any film. Therefore, it saddens me to discuss this further, but I feel the fans’ reactions speak loudly. ‘The Crow’ is not merely a movie; Brandon Lee died creating it, and it was completed as a tribute to his lost talent and tragic demise. It is his legacy. Let it remain so.”

In a conversation with THR, co-screenwriter William Schneider explained that the creative team for the reboot deliberately chose a different path from the one taken by Proyas in his narrative, as they believed following the same route would be unfair and unjust to the movie itself.

Instead of following a predetermined path, we preferred to blaze our own trail, almost as if to mark a special moment and declare, ‘Look, we discovered a unique angle for the narrative, and we want both versions to thrive with their individual narratives and fan bases.’ He continued, “I hope that everyone who sees this movie is reinvigorated in their affection for the people they cherish. Yes, it’s about dealing with grief and loss, but it’s also about sacrifice and the lengths one will go to for the person they adore.”

“The Crow” is playing in theaters nationwide.
