The Chosen fans should watch Netflix’s Mary this Christmas

As a fervent admirer of biblical epics and a devoted viewer of “The Chosen,” I must say I am both excited and impatient for Season 5. However, Netflix has managed to ease my anticipation with their upcoming movie, Mary, set to premiere this Christmas.

In 2025, we can expect the release of Season 5 for “The Chosen”, but don’t worry about the wait, as Netflix plans to offer an early treat this Christmas by airing the movie “Mary” – a captivating tale that delves into Mary’s experience of Jesus’ conception.

Following the exceptional launch of Season 4 of The Chosen this year, garnering unprecedented viewership and earning over $30 million at the box office, it’s understandable that viewers might feel restless. Given that Dallas Jenkins’ series is approaching the much-anticipated (and feared) portion of Jesus’ tale – the Passion – such eagerness can hardly be faulted.

Starting in April 2025, new episodes will become available, and for those who have previously enjoyed “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” with Jenkins, Netflix plans to release another heartwarming, religiously inclined film titled “Mary.

The upcoming movie, helmed by D.J. Caruso (known for “Disturbia”), is being marketed as a “biblical epic chronicling the life of Mary of Nazareth, who experiences rejection after an extraordinary conception and is compelled to conceal herself.

From Mary’s perspective, this historical biblical drama narrates the life story of a significant figure in history who was instrumental in the birth of Jesus,” is a possible paraphrase that maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language.

Mary (Noa Cohen), chosen to give birth to the Messiah, faces rejection after an extraordinary conception and is compelled to hide. When King Herod (Anthony Hopkins) issues a deadly decree to find her newborn child, Mary and Joseph (Ido Tako) flee for their lives, guided by faith and bravery, determined to protect him no matter the cost.

Besides these notable actors, the lineup boasts Stephanie Nur from “Lioness” and “1883”, Susan Brown known for her role in “Game of Thrones”, Ori Pfeffer famed for his work in “Hacksaw Ridge”, and Eamon Farren, who has been seen in “Winchester”.

It would be a good idea to schedule a double feature for you: “The Chosen’s de facto pilot ‘Mary’ from 2017, which preceded the show’s official premiere by two years, and the Netflix movie ‘The Shepherd’. The episode follows Mary, depicting the birth of Jesus and the visit of the shepherds, making it a perfect companion piece for the film.

Mary’s arrival is scheduled for December 6 on Netflix. In the meantime, discover the surprising reasons why Terrifier 3 might be the most underrated Christian film of 2024, and explore some of the top movies that have been released this year.
