‘The Bureau’ Producer Alex Berger, ‘Anikulapo’s’ Kunle Afolayan Headline Ivory Coast’s SICA Film and TV Industry Trade Fair

As an avid fan of global cinema, I find myself truly captivated by the upcoming Salon International du Contenu Audiovisuel d’Abidjan (SICA). The gathering of industry titans such as Alex Berger, Kunle Afolayan, and Sydney Gallonde promises to be a veritable melting pot of creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Alex Berger, producer at “The Bureau” and part of TOP (The Oligarchs Productions), renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan (“Aníkúlápó”), and Sydney Gallonde from Make it Happens Studios in Paris are some of the main figures participating in the Salon International du Contenu Audiovisuel d’Abidjan (SICA), a three-day industry event scheduled for November 5th to 7th, which will take place in Ivory Coast.

In its second year, SICA – initiated by the Ivorian Ministry of Communication – aims to establish Abidjan, the cultural and economic heart of Ivory Coast, as a central hub for the film and television sectors across French-speaking Africa.

As a proponent, I’d express it this way: “I’m excited to be part of an event that’s not just about entertainment, but also about paving the way for a fresh, innovative chapter in local content creation. This platform aims to position the host nation as a significant hub, fostering the growth and distribution of African and global audiovisual content.

Over 250 experts from various industries such as production, distribution, broadcasting, and investment are expected at this year’s event from fifteen different countries. They will participate in a three-day program featuring meetings, workshops, panel discussions, and keynote presentations. The goal is to create an environment that encourages the financing, production, and distribution of multi-platform content from the region, while also bolstering connections between African partners and their international counterparts.

Important events will be held at Sofitel Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan, where they’ll also screen films for the public at three nearby venues in Yopougon, Abobo, and Port-Bouët. Additionally, a day will be set aside to introduce industry attendees to various filming locations in and around Abidjan.

The topic revolves around “Innovation, Variety, and Funding within the Audiovisual Field: Approaches for a Fresh Era of Content in Africa.” This event aligns with a broader goal to stimulate the content industry across French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa and encourage collaborative discussions among professionals from diverse nations.

For this purpose, event organizers have invited several international figures, such as Gallonde – the Parisian producer behind the adaptation of the Harlen Coben series “No Second Chance” – who established Make it Happens Studios in 2018 and will kick off the session with a keynote speech on November 5.

Berger, one of the founders from TOP, which produced global sensation TV shows like “The Bureau,” will also speak. He is also an executive producer for the latest Apple TV+ series titled “La Maison.

Other participants include Afolayan, a prominent figure in modern Nigerian cinema, who was one of the early African content creators to secure a multi-project agreement with Netflix. Additionally, Izzet Pinto, founder and CEO of Global Agency – a Turkish sales company – will be present. It was under his leadership that the groundbreaking TV show “Magnificent Century” gained global recognition.

With strong backing from various Ivorian government institutions such as the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie, the Ministry of Tourism and Leisure, the Ministry of Youth Promotion, Professional Integration, and Civic Service, SICA aims to boost tourism in Ivory Coast – a significant economic force within French-speaking West Africa. Furthermore, SICA seeks to showcase Ivory Coast as one of Africa’s most attractive destinations for film and television production, promising a thriving environment for creative endeavors.
