A BioShock movie is in the works at Netflix, and The Boys actor Jack Quaid has said he would “love” to be in it. In a Reddit AMA to promote his new movie, Novocaine, Quaid said BioShock is one of his favorite video games ever, adding that the franchise has “such a rich lore” that would lend itself to a TV show or a movie adaptation.
Netflix announced a BioShock movie years ago, but we haven’t heard much about it since. A report from 2024 said the movie was undergoing a big shift, with producer Roy Lee saying the movie has been “reconfigured” to become a “more personal film” due to budget cuts at Netflix.
“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Lee said, as reported by Variety. “So we’re doing a much smaller version… It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”
Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) is still on board to direct.
Regarding the “new regime,” Lee was referring to Netflix boss Dan Lin’s mandate at Netflix that is reportedly to “improve the quality” of its movie releases and produce a “wide spectrum of films” at different budget levels to help create more content that can appeal to Netflix’s subscriber base.
Fans may recall how, many years ago, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski attempted to make a $200 million, R-rated BioShock movie for Fast & Furious studio Universal. However, the studio “balked” at his pitch, including the budget and rating, Verbinski said, and the project never got off the ground.
BioShock the game series is continuing as well, as the studio Cloud Chamber is working on a new game in the franchise right now. Not much is known about it, however.
In addition to the AMA, Quaid mentioned that people often compare him to the Max Payne video game character. He acknowledged this resemblance, explaining that when he recently glanced at the Max Payne video game cover art, he had a moment of surprise. “I’m a fan of Rockstar Games, though I haven’t played that specific title yet—it’s on my list, definitely,” he said.
This has to be on purpose lol

Finally, Quaid said in the AMA that he is a “huge video game nerd” and that his current gaming passion is From Software games. “I beat Bloodborne, then I beat Sekiro, and now I’m going full boar into Elden Ring. Actually, the thing I use Reddit the most for is tips and tricks on beating Fromsoft’s bosses. I love how challenging the games are–it took me a while to get into them, but now I’m obsessed,” he said.
Quaid’s new movie, Novocaine, is in theaters now. Quaid stars as a man who cannot feel pain.
