The Boys fans slam “unwatchable” censorship in India after unexpected Season 5 cuts

Following the release of Season 5 of The Boys, viewers in India are criticizing the amount of censorship on the Prime Video show. Many are saying the editing has gone too far, with reports that an entire line of dialogue from one character was completely silenced.

This problem has come up before. The country has very strict censorship rules, and the show The Boys is known for being extremely explicit.

When Season 4 was released, viewers noticed a particularly shocking scene – a sauna sequence reminiscent of the movie Human Centipede – had been removed. This led to complaints that many of the show’s most disturbing and graphic scenes were missing from the version available on Prime Video in India.

Following the premiere of Season 5 Episodes 1 and 2, viewers have voiced a common concern, but this time it focuses on the way characters speak, not anything visual.

The Boys fans slam Season 5 censorship as “out of hand”

A fan on Reddit shared that they encountered censorship while watching the adult-rated show The Boys on Prime Video. Specifically, dialogue from a character in Season 5, Episode 1, was completely muted.

I thought the content must have been deeply offensive or prejudiced, which is why it was taken down and considered unsuitable for viewers in India.

However, when viewers downloaded the episode from another source, they found the controversial line was spoken by Sister Sage. She says, “I don’t believe in your magic sky ghost or his baby sky ghost,” which is a dismissive reference to God and Jesus.

The user pointed out that while a character’s comment might be intended as provocative, they were surprised it was completely censored. They questioned why the censorship board seems to underestimate adult viewers, recalling another instance in the same show where the word ‘Muslim’ was also censored.

It’s inappropriate for India’s film censor board to try and prevent religious conflict by editing movie dialogue, especially when politicians are publicly making divisive and harmful statements.

The post sparked a lot of discussion, with many people sharing examples of censorship in Indian TV and movies. One commenter wrote, “They even censored ‘glory to Hanuman’ in Black Panther! The Indian censor board is unbelievable.”

Someone pointed out the inconsistency in moderation during a recent event: a vape pen was quickly censored in one instance, but a bong wasn’t, even though it appeared shortly after. The commenter believes some moderators likely didn’t recognize the bong or hadn’t included it on their list of prohibited items.

Someone pointed out that a character in Oppenheimer was put in a dress, and they thought it was a really creative choice.

Many others shared the Redditor’s frustration, with one user expressing their anger and disapproval of the censorship, saying, “That really bothered me too. I strongly dislike this censorship.”

Eric Kripke hopes fans can “see what they’re missing” online

Some fans are okay with the censorship if it prevents the superhero show from being canceled altogether.

One person admitted they didn’t like the bleeping either, but felt it was better to have some content censored than risk the show being banned in India due to complaints from religious groups. They also acknowledged the humor in censoring a show called The Boys.

Eric Kripke, the showrunner for The Boys, has spoken about India’s censorship policies before. He previously told LADbible that he had “reluctantly agreed” to edits made to a scene involving the Human Centipede sauna.

He explained that when adapting content for different countries, some have unique broadcast requirements that are very difficult to meet.

There were times when addressing certain issues was actually against the rules, and I understood that was the only solution. I agreed to it with hesitation, as I didn’t see any alternatives. I even met with the editor to explore every other possibility.

We weren’t able to resolve the issue with the broadcast. However, I think it’s a common problem when you’re airing a show worldwide. Hopefully, anyone in India who missed the scene can find a clip or picture online to see what happened.

New episodes of The Boys Season 5 are now available on Prime Video! Episodes 1 and 2 are streaming now, and Episode 3 will be released on April 15th. While you wait, you can learn more about the Teenage Kix, a popular theory about Black Noir, and what happens to Soldier Boy in the original comic books.
