As a film enthusiast who has had the pleasure of witnessing Claudia Doumit‘s exceptional performance as Victoria Neuman in “The Boys,” I find her portrayal of the vice president-elect to be one of the most intriguing and complex characters on the show. Her on-screen demise, though tragic, was a beautifully executed and fitting end for her character.
WARNING: The following story reveals key moments from the final episode of “The Boys” Season 4, which was originally titled “Assassination Run” but renamed before its release on Amazon Prime Video last week. This interview was conducted prior to any attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
Claudia Doumit, an actress from “The Boys,” feels ambivalent about her character’s demise in the Season 4 finale. On the one side, she’s sad to depart from a beloved series. Yet, on the other hand, her character, Victoria Neuman – a powerful vice president-elect – met an extraordinary and intense end.
In the final episode of “The Boys” season four, titled “Assassination Run,” I watched as Neuman, a supe with the power to pop heads, was brutally killed by Butcher (Karl Urban) at a critical moment. This tragic event unfolded as she and her daughter Zoe (Olivia Morandin) were attempting to seek safety among Hughie (Jack Quaid), Annie (Erin Moriarty), and the rest of The Boys’ team. Neuman approached Hughie after Homelander (Antony Starr) had revealed her true identity as a supe to the public, fearing for her daughter’s life amidst the chaos of his supremacist plans to assassinate president-elect Robert Singer (Jim Beaver). Homelander also intended to imprison non-supes who dared to oppose the “heroes.”
Instead of: “But Butcher kills her with his newfound super powers, given to him by the Compound V running through his cancer-ridden body, by shooting out tentacle arms from his chest and pulling apart Neuman right down the middle in front of Neuman’s daughter and Butcher’s teammates — because he doesn’t trust that Neuman has truly changed sides,”
“Doumit found the unexpected turn of events both startling and lovely, meticulously executed as it was. Most importantly, he was proud of his unique and thrilling demise – a distinction in itself. His joy might seem odd, but for characters on this show, an intriguing and well-designed death is a significant milestone.”
“She went on, expressing her uncertainty if she’d been denying reality or just hadn’t come to terms with it yet. That day, work felt no different than usual for her. She had experienced being soaked in fake blood and acting amidst grisly scenes before. The novelty that time was that the fake blood was hers and the gory scene involved her.”
After returning to her trailer, Doumit suddenly understood that there were no more scenes left for her. This moment, filled with both beauty and sadness, struck her deeply.
After Neuman passed away, her last living connection, Hughie (who Neuman reportedly had a deep affection for and considered her closest friend), arranged for Neuman’s child to be admitted to Red River Institute. This institute held personal significance for Neuman as she had lived there during her childhood before being adopted by Vought’s former CEO, Stan Edgar. The sad turn of events is compounded by the fact that Neuman had given her daughter superpowers through Compound V, believing it would provide an additional shield in life.
“Victoria deeply laments the fact that her daughter Zoe’s life may sadly turn out similar to hers, filled with hardships and isolation, despite Victoria’s heartfelt wish for a better future for her,” Doumit expressed. “Alas, it seems inevitable that Zoe will follow in her mother’s footsteps, ending up in Red River. The discovery of her powers only adds to the tragedy, as she is left without a guiding parent and seemingly bound for the same fate.”
I truly hope that a reward awaits Zoe at the end of this challenging tunnel. Her teenage years have been particularly difficult for her, what with all she’s been through and now having to deal with braces on top of it all. Yet, I can’t help but wonder what lies ahead for her.
Although Doumit is unsure of the upcoming events in “The Boys” fifth season and avoids speculating, she holds optimism that Stan Edgar (previously released from imprisonment by Neuman) might rescue Zoe from her impending doom.
“Doumit expressed that it’s unclear what their actions will be. However, since Zoe is considered like family to Stan Edgar, I can only assume that he will offer her support in some way.”
Regarding the last season, Doumit expressed her hope that “Ghost Neuman” might make an appearance (as Butcher continues to see deceased individuals). However, she’s content with having made it this far on the show since joining in Season 2.
“When I joined this show, I had a feeling that her character was going to be killed off. I wasn’t certain, but I understood the kind of show it was. I even expected it to happen sooner. So you can imagine my surprise when I got to keep playing Neuman for as long as I did, wearing her pantsuits and Louboutins.”
“She’s a wildly fascinating, and just endlessly fun character to play with.”
