The Big Lebowski Cast Is Perfect, But Now I Wish I Could See Paul Rudd’s Audition Tape

Released in 1998, The Big Lebowski is widely considered a masterpiece by the Coen brothers, even inspiring a dedicated fanbase and a unique following. The film follows “The Dude” as he unexpectedly becomes entangled in a bizarre and complicated plot involving stolen rugs, a missing toe, and a group of nihilists. It’s a brilliantly crafted movie with a fantastic soundtrack and a stellar cast, led by Jeff Bridges and John Goodman.

I recently found out that Paul Rudd, who was just starting to become well-known back then, actually auditioned for a part in The Big Lebowski. Now I’m desperate to see that audition! It wasn’t for a main character like The Dude or Walter, but for the memorable and slightly awkward role of Brandt, which was brilliantly played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

It’s Hard To Imagine Anyone Besides Philip Seymour Hoffman Playing Brandt So Well

Philip Seymour Hoffman appeared in many excellent films from the 1990s, and often elevated them with his performances. He did this in movies like Twister, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia, as well as The Big Lebowski. It’s difficult to picture anyone else playing Brandt, the famously anxious and eager-to-please assistant to Jeffrey “The Big” Lebowski – often called “Yes Man.”

Hoffman played Brandt with a brilliant mix of silliness and sincerity, creating a character who was both unpredictable and incredibly entertaining to watch. Whether it was his uncomfortable interactions with Bunny Lebowski or showing The Dude around the estate, he had a unique quality that made him captivating, frustrating, and hilarious. It’s difficult to imagine any other actor nailing the role as perfectly.

But Based On What I’ve Heard About Paul Rudd’s Audition, It Would Have Been Wild

While Philip Seymour Hoffman is widely considered the perfect actor for the role of Brandt, he wasn’t the only one who auditioned. Seth Rogen recently shared a story on the Blank Check with Griffin & David podcast – while discussing The Big Lebowski – about Paul Rudd’s audition for the part. And it’s quite a story!

Paul Rudd once told me he auditioned for the role of Brandt in The Big Lebowski. He described the audition as incredibly strange and said he made a really unusual choice during it. This happened while we were filming The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and I had been talking about how much I loved The Big Lebowski at the time.

What exactly happened with Rudd during the audition that made it so embarrassing for him? As Seth Rogen explained…

He started with a strange greeting, saying ‘Hello’ in a peculiar way. I specifically remember him sounding like an old-fashioned cartoon butler – you know, the kind who would drawl out a response like ‘Why, yessss.’

I really need to find this audition tape. Whether Universal Pictures has it hidden away or it’s with the Coen brothers’ collection, it’s become a legendary piece of lost media. Just picture a young Paul Rudd – after Romeo + Juliet but before The Cider House Rules – with his signature grin and anxious energy. It must have been something else!

Although Rudd wasn’t chosen for the role, Hoffman ultimately delivered a fantastic performance, creating one of the most memorable characters in any Coen brothers film.
