The franchise based on “The Big Bang Theory,” which ended in 2019, announced another installment in 2023, intended for streaming on Max (now known as HBO Max). The title of this spinoff was later disclosed as “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.” After much anticipation, the series has been officially greenlit, and the creative team has made public statements. One such statement, shared by co-creator Chuck Lorre, is a fantastically outrageous (and largely embellished) anecdote about himself.
This week, HBO Max confirmed that the series “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” has been given a green light. In a statement released by the streaming platform, renowned producer Chuck Lorre revealed that the idea stemmed from his ambition to create something unconventional. The clever Lorre also mentioned that he aimed to develop a show that die-hard fans of “The Big Bang Theory” would have debated passionately about, due to its potential for both love and loathing. However, it’s the remarks from executive producer Zak Penn that truly stand out:
In the heart of the Amazon Rainforest’s untouched wilderness, I embarked on a spiritual journey when suddenly, a messenger pigeon delivered a message from Chuck Lorre proposing a collaboration to create a show that characters from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would enjoy. Fascinated by this opportunity, I gathered my belongings and flagged down the nearest airship. Simultaneously, Chuck dispatched an exploration team to retrieve Bill Prady, entombed in a block of arctic ice with his shield protecting him. With our collective vision, we embarked on the creation of this unconventional series, which exists within a universe conjured by both Chuck and Bill. I am deeply gratified to be part of such an extraordinary team.
In a more casual and engaging way, It seems unlikely that Zak Penn collaborated with his colleagues on this project just like he described. But I really hope it’s true! The comments from Penn – who has worked on Alphas, Ready Player One, and Beacon 23 – are so comical, they feel straight out of a sitcom. I can’t wait to see how his unique humor plays into the next episode of The Big Bang Theory.
HBO Max hasn’t set a definite launch date for “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” as of now. However, enthusiasts can make use of their subscription to stream all 12 seasons of “The Big Bang Theory” and the seven seasons of its spin-off series “Young Sheldon” in the interim.
