EbMaster TV editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta are talking about the comedy nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards as part of EbMaster’s Award Circuit, sponsored by Paramount+.
This year, two prominent nominees vying for the Emmy award are “The Bear” and “Hacks,” each having previously taken home a prize.
As a devoted fan, I was thrilled when ‘Hacks’ took home the prize last time around. Frankly, I had anticipated ‘The Bear’ would emerge victorious again, but it was ‘Hacks’ who triumphed on that day, making them the current champions. So, for now, they hold the title as the incumbent winner. It’s no secret that Jean Smart has been dominating this category every year, and I have no doubt she’ll continue to do so, as long as her exceptional talent graces our screens.
Even though “The Bear” lost to “Hacks” last year, it will be a major player in this year’s race.
36 nominations in the past, 21 victories, with Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Liza Colon-Zayas among them; last year’s surprise winner. She truly deserves all the recognition. Last year, guest performances were particularly outstanding, featuring Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis in an unforgettable Christmas episode. Creator Christopher Storer also took home a directing award last year, according to Longeretta. Although they didn’t win against ‘Hacks’, they excelled in every other category, impressively so. This most recent season didn’t generate as much buzz, but it’s important to note the release timing – another season is expected around the same time as Emmy voting.
“Abbott Elementary” could be another powerful force this year.
The TV series ‘Abbott Elementary’ has been a consistent contender for awards. Throughout its history, it has amassed 24 nominations and won four times. However, last year it didn’t perform as well as expected, which is concerning because the show seems to get better with each passing season. I believe this might have been the best season yet. Quinta Brunson, who took home the award for Best Actress in 2023, returns to the cast. Sheryl Lee Ralph, a past winner, along with Tyler James Williams and Janelle James have been nominated before, but the entire ensemble is exceptional. I think they all deserve recognition, and hopefully, this trend will continue as expressed by Schneider.
