The Batman Star Breaks Silence On Almost Joining James Gunn’s DCU (But It Could Still Happen)

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been blown away by Colin Farrell’s performance as The Penguin in The Batman – it’s seriously incredible and earned him a Golden Globe nod! He’s really made that character his own within that corner of DC films, and we’re all excited for his Penguin spin-off. But I just learned something fascinating – he was almost part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe! Apparently, he was considered for the role of Sgt. Rock in a planned World War II movie, which would have been a totally different direction for him. It’s wild to think how things could have turned out!

The actor’s statements show how committed he is to the movie and how much he likes the script, despite recent changes to the creative team that have left the film’s future uncertain.

I was listening to Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, and he asked Colin Farrell about the Sgt. Rock movie – you know, the one Luca Guadagnino was supposed to direct. It turns out Farrell thinks the script is genuinely fantastic! This is the first time he’s really talked about how much he loves the project, which is a WWII epic, and it’s exciting to hear he’s still so enthusiastic about it.

Colin Farrell admitted he wasn’t familiar with whatever the question referred to, but understood why someone would ask. He then praised the script it concerned, expressing curiosity about its current status.

Horowitz brought up the recent news that director Luca Guadagnino was no longer involved, which led Farrell to talk about his own position. The actor admitted he didn’t know what was happening with the project now, but he still believes the story itself “has some wonderful stuff” and should be made.

Colin Farrell says he’s completely in the dark about the project’s current status. He’d originally planned to work on it with Luca, and they had some good conversations, but he doesn’t know what’s happening with it now. He does believe it’s a really strong project and should definitely be made, as it contains some excellent material.

The Sgt. Rock movie Farrell was going to star in was a World War II story written by Justin Kuritzkes, a frequent collaborator with the director. It would have centered on Franklin John Rock, a hardened infantry leader (originally Daniel Craig), and his famous unit, Easy Company. The plot reportedly involved Rock teaming up with a member of the French Resistance to prevent the Nazis from obtaining the Spear of Destiny, a powerful and legendary artifact.

What This Means For the DCU and Sgt. Rock

As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following the Sgt. Rock movie news closely, and Colin Farrell recently shed some light on what’s been going on. It sounds like the project is still happening, which is great! But things hit a snag when James Gunn, now heading up DC Studios, felt the script wasn’t quite hitting the mark creatively – even though it had already been approved. That’s why the director quietly left and the movie was put on hold. Basically, they’re starting fresh with the story, but thankfully, Sgt. Rock isn’t dead – just getting a reboot before it even began!

James Gunn recently told Entertainment Weekly that the project is still happening, but needs some creative adjustments. He explained that it wasn’t quite where he wanted it to be, and some changes are necessary. This suggests the film is being reworked, potentially with a new writer and director. As a result, it’s unclear if Colin Farrell will still be involved, as his commitment was to the previous version of the film which is no longer moving forward.

Considering his significant involvement with the Elseworlds stories, particularly his work on The Penguin and The Batman Part II, it’s uncertain whether the highly-regarded actor will have time for a DCU project that’s been moved to a new schedule. Despite this, Sgt. Rock is still considered an important character for the future of the DCU.

The main project is ready to start filming once a new team is assembled and the script is updated to match what the creative leaders want. If everything goes well, Colin might still be able to participate, as he’s very enthusiastic about it.
