As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for animated films, I must say that “The Bad Guys 2” trailer has me absolutely smitten! Having reviewed countless animations over the years and being no stranger to the world of DreamWorks Animation, I can confidently predict that this sequel is set to be a blockbuster.
The villains return in the upcoming sequel, “The Bad Guys 2.” In the latest trailer, we see the reformed band of ex-criminals, who have been striving to reposition themselves as honorable citizens, being coaxed out of retirement for a final mission orchestrated by an all-female team.
In conversation with EbMaster regarding the upcoming sequel, director Pierre Perifel mentioned that the first movie presented an opening for further investigation: “The villains are seen attempting to reform in the end. They’ve served their time and are about to be freed from prison. There lies a significant storyline after this point where they strive to be accepted by society again.
The original voice actors reprise their roles for the animal gang: Sam Rockwell as former pickpocket Mr. Wolf, Marc Maron as Mr. Snake, Craig Robinson as Mr. Shark, Anthony Ramos as Mr. Piranha, and Awkwafina as Ms. Tarantula. Additionally, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Brooks, and Maria Bakalova have joined the voice cast for this project.
Perifel clarifies that the head of the gang is portrayed by Lyonne, who takes on the role of a modernized wolf. He depicts her as being exceptionally intelligent and powerful, yet cooler and younger than Mr. Wolf. Her right-hand man is a boar. This character contrasts Kitty, an over-the-top figure with a tender heart but possessing childlike energy. Perifel then adds that another character in the story is a raven. She’s known for her dry wit and sharp sarcasm, and her humor never misses its mark.
Drawing inspiration from the books by Aaron Blabey, Perfel and Damon Ross hint at a thrilling blend of “James Bond”-like intrigue and the high-octane action of “Mission: Impossible”. This promises an expansion of the world and allows our characters to venture beyond Los Angeles.
According to Ross, “The genres of our books shift, and we’ve been working within the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ genre. Now, we get to take things to the next level; in terms of action, stakes, and epic scenes, and draw inspiration from ‘Mission: Impossible.’ No one excels at creating set pieces like the ‘Mission: Impossible’ series does. We have a rather obvious reference to that.
In 2022, the initial installment of “The Bad Guys” was produced by DreamWorks Animation and earned more than a quarter of a billion dollars globally.
“The Bad Guys 2” hits theaters in 2025. Watch the trailer below.
