The Accountant 2 Breaks Box Office and Scores 93% Rotten Tomatoes Audience Approval

In their much-anticipated comeback on screen in the sequel [movie title], the duo had minimal to show audiences, yet they outdid themselves and achieved a higher Popcornmeter score than anticipated. The film’s critical rating soared to 78%, in stark contrast to the original 2016 film’s controversial 53%. Now, the movie is widely considered one of Affleck’s finest works among viewers.

In the domestic box office, “The Accountant 2” came in third place, surpassed by the re-release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” and the critically acclaimed period vampire film by Ryan Coogler, titled “Sinners.” Despite this competitive positioning, the movie has garnered little criticism, as evidenced by its 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes – an improvement from the 77% score of the original film.

It appears that the upcoming action thriller finds Affleck’s Christian Wolff and Bernthal’s Braxton joining forces in a buddy comedy-style pairing, which has significantly boosted the film’s quality and garnered some of the best reviews for both actors throughout their careers. Remarkably, the movie ranks as Affleck’s third-highest audience score as an actor, trailing behind 2023’s “Air” and the timeless classic “Good Will Hunting.

‘The Accountant 2’ Could Easily Have Remained in Development Hell

Initially, many didn’t expect “The Accountant” to be a success in 2016, as it garnered mixed reviews from critics. However, its unique blend of mathematical genius and deadly combat skills intrigued viewers, leading to an unexpected box office hit. Consequently, plans for a sequel were swiftly set in motion. Unfortunately, between 2018 and 2024, “The Accountant 2” seemed to be on the verge of becoming a forgotten project, with no one willing to approve it. This changed when the production team took action against rights holders Warner Bros. Discovery for inactivity regarding the project. As stated by director Gavin O’Connor:

To put it in my own words as a passionate fan, I’d say: “It felt like a whirlwind of changes and shifting alliances at Warner Bros. We agreed to script the next movie in 2018, but somehow, the usual studio chaos seemed to take over. When Ben established his own studio, we found ourselves at an impasse – if they weren’t going to produce it, why prevent us from moving forward with this film we’ve been eagerly working on for eight years? Thankfully, Warner Bros. showed understanding and granted us the freedom to depart. We didn’t have to look far for our next destination; Amazon Studios had already caught wind of the situation. So, we struck a deal with them – a negative pickup, which meant Ben’s company, Artists Equity, funded the film, making the process an absolute delight.

It appears that Affleck and company are currently enjoying their success, despite the film falling short in this weekend’s box office rankings. However, its performance should not be considered a complete flop, as discussions about a third installment have already begun. This likely means we haven’t seen the last of Christian Wolff, and hopefully production on The Accountant 3 won’t take another nine years to start.
