Taylor Sheridan has achieved incredible success since his early acting role as Officer David Hale in 2008. Now, almost two decades later, he’s become a highly respected and in-demand creator of some of streaming’s biggest hits, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman – all produced for Paramount Plus.
Before creating shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Animal Kingdom, Shooter, and Leverage, Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay for the 2015 film Sicario – the movie that really started his success in television. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s now streaming on Netflix.
This is not hyperbole: Sicario is sensational, .
Sicario Was a Grand Slam for Taylor Sheridan
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt, and Benicio Del Toro, who each deliver captivating performances. Their characters are caught in a complicated web of relationships, where loyalty and suspicion clash with ideas of duty and what’s right, often forcing them to choose between the two.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie follows Kate Macer, an FBI agent who’s quickly become successful in a male-dominated field. She’s given a crucial assignment by a secretive government agent named Matt Graver, joining a team fighting the growing drug war. The team, led by the tough and enigmatic Alejandro, operates along the U.S.-Mexico border, using rival cartel leaders to uncover a major drug kingpin.
Taylor Sheridan won a Writers Guild of America Award for the original screenplay of Sicario. The film was highly praised, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91% approval rating from critics and an 85% rating from audiences (based on over 50,000 ratings as of March 2nd).
And Then … Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado Held Nothing Back
Beyond critical acclaim, Sicario also performed well financially. It earned $84.9 million worldwide on a $30 million budget – a solid success, even when accounting for an estimated $20 million in marketing costs.
A sequel, Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado, followed in 2018, bringing back Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. This installment was even more intense, with the pair kidnapping the daughter of a drug lord to escalate conflict between rival groups. However, they soon found themselves disagreeing—both with each other and with their own principles—about what to do with her.
The scene was so intense that viewers were on the edge of their seats, completely captivated and anxious about what would happen next.
Sheridan’s work on Paramount Plus has been incredibly successful, and it shows no signs of stopping. Anyone familiar with the Sicario movies understands the reason – his storytelling is simply outstanding.
