Spoilers for 28 Years Later follow.
You won’t have to wait nearly two decades for another sequel, thanks to Cillian Murphy! As an executive producer on the series, his producer credit holds significant importance. This, along with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s efforts, is helping to bring more movies to life. After all, they say show business has its reasons. Following the release of 28 Days Later, and particularly after that suspenseful ending, we’re eager to know what becomes of Spike now that he’s on his own. So, let’s delve into the next chapter of the 28 Days franchise as Danny Boyle hands over the director’s role to a new talent who will explore the cult dynamics in the zombie world in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
Wait, so Danny Boyle didn’t direct this one?
Instead of shooting each movie separately with a significant time gap, Danny Boyle decided to direct both “28 Years Later” and “The Bone Temple” consecutively. To manage this swift production, he handed over the directorial duties for other projects like “Candyman” and “The Marvels” to Nia DaCosta. As Alex Garland wrote the scripts for these films one after another, it made more financial and logistical sense to film them back-to-back. This explanation was shared by Boyle in an interview with IndieWire.
Is Cillian Murphy coming back?
It seems that Jim’s character might be returning to the franchise. As director Danny Boyle explained, “Bone Temple” and “28 Years Later” set up Murphy’s return, following Spike’s encounter with Jimmy and his cult at the end of the movie. Boyle told Indiewire that they had some regrets about the direction the story took in the first film, which limited its progression. To rectify this, they decided to focus on retrenching the story, leading to a more mythical and expansive narrative. This narrative spans three films, two of which have been shot, with all connecting characters eventually bringing Cillian into the picture. Given that Murphy was seen fleeing from zombies last September, it’s likely we’ll see Jim back in “Bone Temple”.
In other words, [DaCosta] may not complete a full character transformation, according to Boyle’s statement to Business Insider. He hinted, “You’ll see a bit of Cillian at the end,” but added, “You need to wait for Cillian.” Hopefully, this appearance by Cillian will help secure funding for the third film. Essentially, more of Cillian is being kept behind a paywall, which can be disappointing.
Has a third film been confirmed?
They haven’t started working on it yet, but Boyle and Garland are eager to contribute to the third movie once Sony provides them with the necessary funding.
When’s the movie coming out?
Murphy’s return comes to the big screen on January 16, 2026.
