It’s that time again! Let’s get ready to analyze the films at the festivals, just like in the movie “Moneyball”. The standing ovations each film receives becomes our first data point for building our MFL (Movie Festival League) team in September. Every trade is about counting the applause (as Deadline puts it), because more applause means a better movie. Last year, the most applauded Cannes film was “The Substance”, which garnered 11 minutes of ovation. Interestingly, this did lead to many nominations and wins for the MUBI original throughout awards season (though Demi Moore unfortunately missed out on the most coveted statuette).
In a similar fashion as we did last year in Venice, we’re calculating averages for these O’s this time around. Typically, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, along with Deadline, can be a bit frugal with their ovations. Don’t worry about the specifics of our calculations! They’ve been meticulously handled. Here are the longest standing ovations from Cannes 2025, listed in descending order from shortest to longest. Trust us on this one!
Or, for a more casual and conversational tone:
Just like we did back at Venice last year, we’re crunching some numbers for these O’s this time. Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline can sometimes be a bit stingy with their ovations, but don’t you worry – we’ve got the math down pat! Here are the longest standing ovations from Cannes 2025, sorted from least to most prolonged. Trust us on this one, buddy!
Sound of Falling only heard the sound of clapping for ~4 minutes
The vulture labels “Sound of Falling” as a potential top movie of the festival, but it’s surprising given the standing ovation wasn’t overwhelming. This is the second film by writer-director Mascha Schilinski, and perhaps her future films might receive longer applause as she gains more experience.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning: a stuntacular 5.8 minutes
During Tom Cruise’s final scene as Ethan Hunt in the movie, the applause duration varied significantly between different sources. Deadline reported that the audience was standing and applauding for approximately 7.5 minutes, while THR stated it was less than 5 minutes. However, both agree that the crowd was enthusiastic throughout the screening.
