As a cinephile with an eclectic taste and a soft spot for versatile actors, I am thrilled to see Teyonah Parris embarking on yet another exciting venture! Having made her mark in a wide range of projects, from Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “WandaVision” and “The Marvels,” it’s fascinating to witness her growth as an artist.

Actress Teyonah Parris, known for her roles in “The Marvels” and “They Cloned Tyrone”, is set to dive into the universe of Matchbox cars for an upcoming film by Apple Original Films titled, “Matchbox”.

The movie adaptation, derived from the collection of real-world toy cars, features John Cena alongside new addition Parris, with Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, and others rounding out the growing ensemble cast.

Film director Sam Hargrave is slated to take charge of a movie titled “Extraction,” with a script penned by David Coggeshall (“The Family Plan,” “Orphan: First Kill”) and Jonathan Tropper (upcoming works like “Your Friends and Neighbors,” “The Adam Project,” “Warrior,” “See”). This production will be brought to life by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, as well as Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films.

The story, titled “Matchbox”, centers around a band of old pals who are compelled to unite once more in order to prevent a catastrophic event from unfolding globally. In the process, they’ll rekindle the bonds of friendship that once united them.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about a movie that draws inspiration from the iconic Matchbox toy vehicles. This timeless plaything originated in 1953, the brainchild of automotive enthusiast Jack Odell. You see, Jack’s daughter was only allowed to bring a toy to school if it could fit comfortably in a matchbox. When her classmates started demanding their own “matchbox car,” the brand took off like a rocket! Now, as reported by Mattel, two Matchbox cars are snapped up every second somewhere across the globe. Quite remarkable, isn’t it?

In 2023, Parris had a remarkable year on the big screen, featuring alongside John Boyega and Jamie Foxx in Netflix’s thriller “They Cloned Tyrone,” directed by Juel Taylor. Additionally, she made her debut as MCU superhero Monica Rambeau from “WandaVision” in theatres, joining forces with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel in Nia DaCosta’s “The Marvels.

The resume of this Juilliard alumna showcases a diverse portfolio, including films such as “Chi-Raq,” the acclaimed Sundance movie “Dear White People,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Candyman.” Additionally, she has been part of TV shows like “Mad Men” and “Survivor’s Remorse.” Upcoming, you can catch her in the Netflix series “No Good Deed,” headlined by Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano.

Parris is represented by CAA, Color Creative and Fox Rothschild LLP.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.
