Lauren LaVera, known for her role in the popular horror series featuring Art the Clown, has a new film project lined up. She’ll be starring in a movie that tackles a recent viral internet question: what happens when a person is stranded in the wilderness with a man and a bear?
According to Per Screen Daily, LaVera will star in the upcoming survival thriller, Man or Bear. The film will be introduced to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival this week by The Coven’s Priscilla Ross Smith and Kendall Anlian. Teresa Sutherland, who directed Lovely, Dark and Deep and also wrote for the Netflix horror series Midnight Mass, will direct. The screenplay is based on Jaime Saingor’s short film, Black Creek Trail, and was written by Saingor herself.
Lauren LaVera Must Actually Make the Choice in Man or Bear
In the film Man or Bear, LaVera stars as Alex, a woman backpacking alone who meets a seemingly nice hiker. He’s traveling without any supplies and insists on joining her. As his behavior becomes strange and unpredictable, Alex must trust her instincts and fight for survival against both him and a dangerous animal in the wilderness.
Saginor, who appears in a supporting role in the film, shared that the movie was inspired by a frightening solo backpacking trip they took. They explained that the story ultimately delves into the power of intuition and why someone – particularly a woman – might ignore their instincts, even when facing danger.
Okay, so we took this short film that was already getting some buzz, and over the last couple of years, we really built out the team to turn it into a full-length psychological thriller. Honestly, Jaime’s vision has been guiding us the whole time – they’ve been the key to making sure we stayed on track and delivered something truly impactful. That’s what Joanne from Be Brave Media and I at Mazo Partners both agree on!
The Idea Comes From an Internet Debate
LaVera’s song, “Man or Bear,” echoes a viral internet discussion from 2024. The question posed to women was simple: would they rather encounter a strange man or a bear while alone in the woods? The widespread response of “the bear” highlighted the very real fears many women have about their safety around unfamiliar men. The question quickly became a popular meme and a significant moment in internet culture.
The Coven also managed international distribution for the Terrifier films, with the latest, Terrifier 3, earning $36 million internationally. A fourth movie is planned, and Samantha LaVera is expected to return as Sienna Shaw. LaVera recently appeared alongside Djimon Hounsou in the horror thriller Twisted, and her other film credits include The Well, The Life of Chuck, and The Fetus. She’s also had roles in the Marvel series Iron Fist, as well as MacGyver and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Man or Bear does not yet have a set release date, but LaVera’s .
