As a horror enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate some of the sequels they’ve produced. Halloween 3 is remarkably underrated, and its 2018 reboot was a refreshing change, like a breeze on an eerie night. The 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake stands out as the only follow-up that successfully recaptured the original’s tense, brutal, and gritty atmosphere. Friday the 13th deserves praise for its audaciousness – Jason in Hell! Jason in New York! Jason in Space! It’s a wild ride. And let’s not forget Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which managed to surpass sequel fatigue with a third installment that might just be the best film in the series.
However, despite this significant caveat, they’re all associated with some utterly terrible and tedious material, like the endless, cheesy nonsense that A New Beginning represents. They occupied space that could have been utilized for something fresh and innovative; Scream managed to do so, but after nearly two decades, whispers about Scream 7 hint at a potential need for a graceful exit.
Terrifier 4 is protecting Art the Clown’s legacy
Five years ago, if someone had asked me about Terrifier’s popularity, I would have been utterly clueless and replied with a puzzled question: “Terrifier? Never heard of it!” But now, I can’t help but marvel at its success!
Terrifier stands out uniquely – it’s a gory spectacle that didn’t initially aim for mainstream popularity but achieved global recognition due to its intense, shocking violence and David Howard Thornton’s amusing yet chilling portrayal of Art the Clown.
The release of Terrifier 3 is expected to leave its new fans eager for more, placing high expectations on director Damien Leone to surpass himself with the next project (though after the iconic glass scene in Vicky, it’s hard to imagine how that could be done). Regardless, Terrifier 4 should generate even greater earnings.
Yet, it’s evident that Leone’s work demonstrates a certain level of maturity and aspiration. If he chooses to move on from Art the Clown, his talent and potential will undoubtedly shine even brighter. With only four films (which includes All Hallows’ Eve), Leone has already earned global recognition as a director – it wouldn’t be surprising if he decided to explore new directions in his career, perhaps following the path of Hellraiser with multiple Terrifier movies released directly on video-on-demand platforms.
It seems he has other projects in mind, and we’re not aware of what they might be, but the fact that Terrifier 3’s box office earnings haven’t lured his desire for profit suggests a promising future. I anticipate more years, if not many, filled with cinematic darkness from him, a filmmaker known for his video-nasty style, approved for the big screen.
Primarily, the enduring legacy of Terrifier will be something worthy of admiration: the epitome of an indie project reaching mainstream success, before it evolves into an endless cycle of horror. With Terrifier 4, the series has the opportunity to not only escalate but also conclude grandly.
