The first boss that most players encounter in Terraria, King Slime, may not have a vast domain, but they are undeniably royal due to their status. They can catch you off guard and flatten you unexpectedly. This large, blue, and springy monarch serves as an excellent introduction to test your courage, providing useful items as rewards and establishing the atmosphere for future boss fights.
Unlike some formidable enemies that reside deeper within Terraria’s depths, King Slime tends to be less dramatic with its appearances. It may show up if you nudge it correctly or unexpectedly gatecrash a gathering. While not essential, vanquishing it serves as an initial stepping stone for significant advancement. This victory grants early mobility options and sets a clear combat benchmark for newcomers. Here’s a guide on how to summon and conquer King Slime in Terraria.
How to prepare for King Slime
Although King Slime may not seem as formidable as the Moon Lord, it’s wise to be well-prepared nevertheless. This first Terraria boss might appear to be just a large blue blob, but don’t let its appearance deceive you. It has the ability to teleport, summon minions, and flatten you as skillfully as a professional pancake maker if you’re not careful.
Ensure you’ve got armor that’s at least of copper quality or higher – sporting wooden armor could be risky, and relying solely on appearance-enhancing gear might lead to an unexpected trip to the respawn screen. If you’re feeling daring or prefer a tough fight, melee weapons could work, but at this early stage, it’s wiser to opt for a ranged weapon to keep your distance. Shurikens are effective, but my recommendation is a bow with flaming arrows; you can craft the ammo using regular arrows and torches. For accessories, try locating a grappling hook and Hermes Boots from Underground and Cavern chests – these items will aid in maintaining your speed and momentum.
Building a platform arena before engaging with life’s challenges, much like confronting Terraria bosses, makes things significantly easier. Felling some trees with your axe will provide ample wood for crafting blocks manually. Secure the initial wooden platform to something solid, like stone, but once you begin expanding, you can remove the foundation without fear of collapse. As you progress, it becomes increasingly simple to dodge the King and steer clear of being cornered by blue slimes.
How to spawn King Slime
There are a few ways to get the royal jelly rolling, and none of them require a regal invitation.
King Slime spawns in three different ways:
- Use a Slime Crown – Crafted at a Demon or Crimson Altar with 1 Gold/Platinum Crown and 20 Gel. Crowns are made from 1 Ruby + 5 Gold/Platinum bars at an anvil. Simple, clean, and entirely under your control
- Naturally spawn during Slime Rain – This random weather event causes slimes to fall from the sky. If you defeat enough, King Slime may drop in unexpectedly. It’s fashionably late, but will always show up towards the end if you meet the 150 slime quota
- Random spawn – On rare occasions, King Slime just spawns because he feels like it. You’ll either need to roam the outer edges of your world to the far left or right, particularly near forests, but you might stumble into an accidental boss fight. Just make sure it’s daytime, you’re on the surface, and there’s grass nearby
King Slime employs several strategies: it can transport itself if you move too far off, accelerates more rapidly as its health decreases, and continuously releases blue slimes to hinder you. Furthermore, it’s one of the rare bosses that may vanish or despawn when you venture too far during combat or die, so be cautious not to wander too far from it while fighting.
How to beat King Slime
As a gamer, I always make sure to maintain some distance from King Slime. This massive, lumbering creature might be slow and predictable, but don’t underestimate it – if you linger too long in one spot, it could easily leap onto you! To navigate both vertically and horizontally, use the platform layers or rope elevators. Remember to attack from a distance with ranged weapons as often as possible. King Slime only teleports when it’s far away from me, so stay within a few blocks if I want to engage in melee combat without getting caught off guard by an unexpected transportation and jellification!
In Expert or Master Mode, make sure to continuously eliminate the bluish gooey creatures as they appear. This is crucial due to the importance of managing large groups in these difficulty levels. Failing to do so could turn your battlefield into a lethal bouncy castle. If you’re equipped with flaming arrows, shurikens, or even early magical weapons like the Sparking Wand, prioritize dealing continuous damage per second (DPS) and keep moving around (kiting).
In a friendly skirmish, assign a tank character to engage and distract an enemy, allowing other players with ranged abilities to attack from higher ground. This character won’t undergo any transformations but will become more aggressive and move faster as it takes damage, gradually shrinking in size. Don’t worry if the tank moves quicker; that simply indicates you’re nearing victory.
King Slime drops and rewards
As a gamer, conquering King Slime rewards me generously with a royal haul of items, perfect for kick-starting my initial expedition. While none of these loots are strictly necessary for advancing, they sure come in handy when I’m prepping for the next battle!
Classic Drops
- Solidifier – Lets you craft slime-themed furniture
- Slime Gun – A bit useless but completely fun, giving you the ability to inflict the Slime debuff on both enemies and friendly NPCs alike
- Slime Hook – A grapple hook styled blue after the King
- Slimy Saddle – Ride around on your own mini Slime. It’s faster, jumps far higher than you can, and even float on water
- Ninja Armour Pieces – Helmet, shirt, and pants drop individually, affording decent movement bonuses and a stylish headband to boot
- King Slime Trophy – Commemorate your victory with a wall hanging
- King Slime Mask – A vanity item that plonks a blue bubble on your head
- Gel – Makes crafting a little easier, especially when making torches, sticky glowsticks, bombs, or the Slime Crown you’ll use to summon the King.
Expert and Master Mode Drops
In the harder modes of Terraria’s boss battles (Expert and Master), you’ll find that all the bonuses from the Classic mode still apply. However, these challenging levels also offer additional incentives as rewards for your efforts.
- Royal Gel – An accessory that makes most regular slimes friendly. Consider it an early-game peace treaty
- Coins – Not glamorous, but everyone loves a bit of pocket change
- King Slime Relic (Master Mode-only) – A golden piece of furniture to celebrate your win
- Royal Delight (Master Mode-only) – Summon the Slime Prince as your pet, right after you kill its father
Defeating King Slime marks an important early accomplishment in the game: it awards the Slippery Shinobi achievement, adds a new entry to your Bestiary, and brings you one step nearer to mastering Terraria’s progressively challenging mayhem.
