Terminally Ill Fan Was Able To Play Borderlands 4 Early, And He Says It's Amazing

As a heart-warmed spectator of this extraordinary event, I must confess that my admiration for Gearbox and Randy Pitchford knows no bounds. The story of Caleb McAlpine, a devoted Borderlands fan facing the challenges of stage-4 cancer, has touched the hearts of many gaming enthusiasts worldwide.

Previously this year, a terminally ill fan of Borderlands, Caleb McAlpine, made an appeal, which he called a “long shot,” to Gearbox Software. He hoped they would let him play Borderlands 4 before he passes away due to stage-4 cancer, as his life expectancy is only about two years. Luckily, Gearbox granted his wish and arranged for him to experience the game ahead of its release.

In a Reddit post, McAlpine acknowledged the assistance from everyone who backed his appeal, and revealed that Gearbox arranged for him and a companion to travel first-class to their offices in Frisco, Texas. While there, McAlpine interacted with the developers and Randy Pitchford, the founder of Gearbox. He also expressed his initial thoughts on Borderlands 4.

McAlpine shared that he had the chance to preview Borderlands 4 so far, and found it simply incredible. He expressed uncertainty about being present when the game launches, but wanted to extend his gratitude to everyone for their affection, encouragement, and contributions towards its creation. He described the entire experience as truly amazing and utterly enjoyable.

At Gamescom’s grand opening in August, Borderlands 4 was formally unveiled, yet details about the upcoming sequel remain scant. Gearbox has shared some intriguing concept art for a fresh planet set to feature in the game, while hinting at a new character who supposedly poses a greater threat than Handsome Jack.

2025 will mark the arrival of Borderlands 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, although an exact release date has not been specified yet. Take-Two Interactive, the company that owns Gearbox, has hinted they won’t launch Grand Theft Auto 6 and Borderlands 4 too close together, so we must exercise patience for further updates.
