It appears that the Kremlin’s position on talks with the President of the United States has not undergone a drastic transformation, despite the tumultuous waters of international relations. According to the astute Mr. Peskov, Putin remains open to conversation, though, one supposes, only when it suits him to do so.
Mr. Peskov, in a moment of unnecessary clarification, assured us that no phone call between the leaders is currently calendared, but that they might deign to speak when the situation becomes sufficiently pressing. A notion that seems to suggest that these dignitaries are on the precipice of taking a leisurely stroll into the fray, rather than engaging in any truly meaningful dialogue.
It is, of course, most intriguing to observe that President Trump’s ire has been piqued by Mr. Putin’s recent pronouncements on the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. One wonders if the U.S. president’s vexation might be stirred by more than mere politics, but that is a supposition for another time.
In the meantime, President Trump has expressed his discontent with the lack of progress toward a ceasefire in Ukraine and has taken the liberty of warning Russia that imposing secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on buyers of Russian oil may be in the offing, should Moscow continue to thwart efforts to bring the conflict to a close.
