TelevisaUnivision Swings to Q1 Profit on Balance Sheet Improvements

TelevisaUnivision, a major Spanish-language media firm, reported that it moved into profit during the initial quarter. This shift occurred due to cost reductions and an increase in the performance of their streaming service, despite the fact that crucial income sectors faced decreases.

The proprietor of the Univision TV network announced that they made $11.7 million this time, which is a significant improvement from the loss of $52 million last year. They achieved this by reducing costs and boosting cash flow. Despite a 13% drop in advertising revenue in both the U.S. and Mexico, as well as a 7% decrease in subscription and licensing fees, these measures helped the company avoid more substantial losses.

This period, one issue that TelevisaUnivision encountered was not having the Spanish-language broadcast of this year’s Super Bowl, a factor that had previously attracted fresh advertising and audience last year.

Daniel Alegre, CEO of TelevisaUnivision, stated in a pre-written message that the company demonstrated robust performance in the initial quarter. Looking ahead to 2025, our focus is on strengthening the unity and collaboration between our U.S. and Mexican teams. We aim to create a more adaptable and streamlined organization.

After taking over as the leader of TelevisaUnivision from Wade Davis, who previously served as Viacom’s CFO and engineered the acquisition of Univision in 2020 followed by its merger with Mexico’s Grupo Televisa in 2022, Alegre (the new CEO) has been focusing on strengthening the financial health of TelevisaUnivision. Notably, Alegre was previously the president and COO of Activision Blizzard, a company bought by Microsoft for $69 billion. Despite stepping down as CEO, Davis continues to hold the position of vice-chairman at TelevisaUnivision.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that during the initial phase, TelevisaUnivision announced a significant growth in subscribers for its ViX streaming service, across its free and premium categories. Additionally, we’ve sealed a strategic distribution deal with DirecTV, expanding our horizons even further. To top it off, we’ve secured the broadcasting rights for the Olympics in Mexico, all the way up to 2032! What a time to be a movie lover!
