The bustling gaming festival has passed. During this event, participants not only enjoyed thrilling combat encounters, amidst some challenges with the PlayStation 5, but also received updates on upcoming games and a significant data breach involving the source code of a well-known title.
Last weekend, I was thrilled to be part of EVO Japan 2025, where more than 9,300 competitors gathered! A whopping 6,500+ of us battled it out in Street Fighter 6, but the tournament wasn’t just about the giants of the Fighting Game Community squaring off. The event was equally exciting due to developers’ announcements and, in one instance, a major leak!
Virtua Fighter returns to consoles, including the Switch 2
To date, we hadn’t learned much about the comeback of Virtua Fighter, a game developed by the creators of Yakuza. Yesterday, this didn’t alter during Sega’s special stream. During the broadcast, they displayed fresh content from the Virtua Fighter Project, featuring an old fighter named Wolf Hawkfield who has undergone significant changes, specifically in his wrestler persona.
Regrettably, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio hasn’t shared a lot about the title yet. Instead, they’ve delved into the artistic aspects (providing behind-the-scenes content) and unveiled some fresh gizmos linked to VF. The studio has also announced that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O will release on XSX/S, PS5, and the upcoming Switch 2. This game will incorporate both network rollback technology and multiplayer games across platforms.
Guilty Gear: source code leak and overheating PS5
Fans of the Guilty Gear series received a good deal of news, but unfortunately they had fewer reasons for satisfaction. The final match between Daru_I-NO and RedDitto on the PlayStation 5 was disrupted by overheating, and it appears this wasn’t an isolated incident during the tournament, as the venue reportedly lacked adequate cooling.
The code for Guilty Gear Strive has been illegally posted on the internet, along with details from Season 4 and announcements about upcoming characters in the next season. This information includes Unika’s track, who is part of the Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers series, Lucy’s debut recordings from Cyberpunk Edgerunners (the first outside character ever in GG), and a list of fighters for Season 5. Fans are either excited to see their favorites returning or upset that some characters are absent. Additionally, the leak has taken away the excitement of the surprise reveal, which would have certainly caused quite a stir.
Regardless, the leaked source code stirs up the strongest feelings among players. Some worry it could be used by cheaters or hackers, while others think such concerns are overblown. On the other hand, some web users view the leak as a boon for modders.
At the moment, Arc System Works studio has not provided any updates regarding this matter. However, a sneak peek for Unika, set to debut in Guilty Gear: Strive, has been officially unveiled on May 27th.
Tekken 8 still to be fixed. “New” warrior disappointed fans
* Tekken 8 will receive three more updates, with the first one scheduled for May 13th, followed by another on June 3rd, and finally one in the summer.
* The next character joining the game is generating interest, but it’s the patches that are particularly captivating “Iron Fist” enthusiasts.
* The fans aren’t overly excited about the new character, as they find the returning DLC from Tekken 7 – Fahkumram unappealing. This could be because when it was first introduced in the seventh installment, it bore a striking resemblance to how Tekken 8 looks now.
As a gamer, I can say that the issue lies with the approach taken in the second season of this game, where only buffs were introduced without any nerfs. In practice, I’ve found that this strategy doesn’t yield the desired results. This could be one reason why attendance at the T8 tournament was disappointingly low – around a thousand players participated, although it remains the second most played game at Japan EVO 2025.
Bandai Namco has made some adjustments, but players are still dissatisfied with the overly aggressive current gameplay mechanics. Consequently, the upcoming update will restrict damage from mid-air combinations and progressively alter moves where the risk vs. reward balance currently favors the attacker excessively (for example, even after blocking, they still give a significant advantage).
Indeed, maintaining balance (and making improvements in ranked mode) isn’t the only focus. Each of these upcoming updates will also bring fresh cosmetic items to T8, featuring collaborations such as crossovers with PAC-MAN and the movie Karate Kid: Legends.
The game developers aren’t just working on balance changes and ranked improvements; they’re also adding new cosmetic items to T8 that include collaborations with PAC-MAN and the movie Karate Kid: Legends.
In addition to that, let’s talk about a new character unveiled in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, causing quite a stir among enthusiasts. Furthermore, we have news of an Overwatch 2 collaboration with Street Fighter 6.
