Believe it or not, Karla Sofia Gascón is still welcome on the Netflix lot.
Regardless of the buzz generated by actress Emilia Pérez’s trailblazing movie “Emilia Pérez” and its appearance at this year’s Oscars, causing a media stir, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos indicates that they would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with her once more.
Indeed, it’s important to show understanding when errors occur,” remarked Sarandos in an interview with EbMaster, celebrating his 25 years at the streaming behemoth. “We do extend that understanding.
After making a sensational debut at Cannes Film Festival last summer, “Emilia Pérez” found itself embroiled in controversy in January when controversial social media posts by Gascón from the past were brought to light – these posts mentioned George Floyd’s death, the Muslim community, and diversity at the Oscars, causing great offense. This scandal arose as Jacques Audiard’s musical about a drug cartel was leading the race for best picture, earning 13 top nominations and eventually winning two awards.
In his introduction, Sarandos was directly questioned about whether “Emilia Pérez” might have won the Best Picture award if not for the Gascón controversy.
Sarandos expressed his dislike for that specific question because it generates numerous ‘What If’ scenarios,” he said. “Although ‘Emilia Pérez’ was the favorite, it wasn’t guaranteed to win Best Picture. It was an exceptional movie with a strong campaign behind it, and I’m disappointed by the outcome.
At the moment, Gascón admitted she recognized the discussions about her past social media posts that hurt people. As someone from a marginalized community, she is familiar with this type of distress and deeply apologizes to those she inadvertently harmed. Throughout her life, she has been striving for a better world. She firmly believes that light will ultimately overcome darkness.
After an interview with CNN en Espanol and a subsequent disappearance, Gascón missed various events including the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, and SAG Awards. These events recognized her as a nominee for best actress at each show. Eventually, she made an appearance at the Academy Awards as part of her film’s creative team, expressing gratitude for being able to return and for the warm reception from her peers in the Hollywood industry.
Additionally, EbMaster inquired whether Netflix might revise their approach towards examining the social media activities of their own artists.
