Ever since its debut in 2015, Discord has emerged as the primary hub for both voice and text communication. Now boasting more than 200 million monthly active users and hosting approximately 28 million global-created servers, it stands as a testament to its widespread popularity.
On October 8, 2024, it was disclosed that Russia’s communication oversight body, Roskomnadzor, took action against a popular messaging app based in California due to its noncompliance with Russian laws.
According to Reuters, Discord was instructed to eliminate nearly 1,000 pieces of content considered illegal by Russia and was penalized for not promptly removing prohibited material.
