Renowned esports team, Team Liquid, found their X account compromised following a crypto scammer’s hack, leading some individuals to mistakenly believe it was a prank on April Fool’s Day.
Since the emergence of cryptocurrencies, unscrupulous individuals have managed to infiltrate some of the most prominent social media profiles, with the aim of deceiving followers through fraudulent schemes.
In August 2024, an instance occurred where McDonald’s temporarily lost management of its Instagram account. During this time, a cryptocurrency swindler hijacked the account and used it to publicize a memecoin inspired by one of their mascots, Grimace.
On April 1st, Team Liquid suffered an attack when a cryptocurrency fraudster gained access to their account on platform X.
Team Liquid hacked by crypto scammer
The announcement featured a fittingly titled meme-based cryptocurrency, Liquid ($LIQUID), along with the essential details required for purchasing the token, such as its wallet address.
Team Liquid has proudly stood at the pinnacle of esports for more than two decades, continuously competing, pushing boundaries, and creating a timeless legacy passed down through generations.
As the post rapidly gained popularity, a swarm of users rushed to the comment section, expressing doubt about whether it could be an April Fool’s prank or not.
Nevertheless, the team’s social media representative swiftly jumped into the discussion to clarify that they weren’t responsible for the tweet in question.
They stated, “That’s not Team Liquid; avoid communicating or engaging with that account instead.
After noticing similar occurrences, both Liquid’s Valorant and DOTA teams confirmed that their main account had been compromised by a cryptocurrency fraudster. Since then, the post about the incident seems to have been removed, indicating that the team may have regained control of the account.
In August, tech YouTuber Linus Sebastian disclosed that hackers had seized control of his Linus Tech Tips account on platform X, explaining that he received an email stating their account was being used in Russia. Eager to secure the account, he clicked on the provided link to change the password unknowingly handing over control of the page to a scammer.
