Team Fortress 2’s PvE Mode Is Getting A “Much-Needed” Update, And Valve Wants Help

As a dedicated gamer of Team Fortress 2, I’m thrilled to hear that the popular PvE mode Mann vs. Machine is getting an overhaul! Valve, the developers, have announced this “long-awaited” update and are inviting us, the community, to collaborate on creating fresh content for it. Can’t wait to jump in and contribute!

Originally introduced as part of a significant update back in 2012, “Mann vs. Machine” is a game mode where teams join forces to eliminate waves of robots trying to transport a bomb. Robots that are destroyed drop cash which can be utilized to buy class enhancements. As per the Team Fortress 2 wiki, there are presently 29 individual missions and five connected operations (sequences of missions) available for “Mann vs. Machine”.

13 years after its initial release, Valve is planning to revamp the popular game mode “Mann vs. Machine” with community involvement. In true Valve fashion, reminiscent of their humoristic approach towards Team Fortress 2, they are inviting players to design and submit new maps and missions for this update, with a deadline set for August 27. The best submissions may be incorporated into the revamp.

In simpler terms, Valve’s playful blog post explains that the upcoming update, partially at least, is expected around Halloween. However, it’s not mandatory for all submitted maps to be Halloween-themed; some can be, but they don’t have to be.

In the fictional realm where these events transpired, reminiscent of ancient Greece, it was proclaimed by the ruler on stone slabs that despite the new update coinciding with their candy-gathering festival akin to Halloween, there was no necessity for all maps to follow a Halloween theme (first pronouncement) and in fact, it was advisable not to do so (second pronouncement), as penned by Valve.

Team Fortress 2 has previously sought assistance from its community for developing fresh content. In a significant summer update in 2023, it added 14 user-generated maps to its class-based FPS. Earlier this year, Valve made the entire source code of Team Fortress 2 accessible to the public, empowering the community to modify, expand, or rebuild TF2 as they see fit.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of Team Fortress 2 Classic on Steam this year! This beloved mod takes us back to the original 2008 version of the game, but with fresh additions like new weapons, game modes, and user-friendly improvements.

Even though it’s almost two decades old, Team Fortress 2 remains incredibly popular on Steam and stands among the finest free games available there. Over the last half year, the game has consistently attracted between approximately 40,000 to 56,000 simultaneous players, peaking at over 250,000 during 2023 after the launch of the aforementioned summer update.
