So, there’s this school teacher in Texas, Russell Leahy, who thought he was talking to his bank, but turns out, it was just a bunch of scammers with a really good phone voice. 📞

According to WFAA, these clever fraudsters called Russell and convinced him they were from Chase Bank. They told him he’d been defrauded and needed to move his money to a new account. Because, you know, the best way to avoid fraud is to transfer all your money to a stranger. 🤦‍♂️

They even sent him text messages and banking info that looked legit. I mean, if I could make my texts look that official, I’d be a millionaire. 💰

Now, Russell is warning everyone to be extra cautious. This 26-year-old newlywed, who spends his weekends at home saving up for a family, is now living paycheck to paycheck after losing $32,000 to these scammers. 🙁

And here’s the kicker: Chase only gave him back $2,000. Because apparently, being tricked into giving away your life savings doesn’t count as fraud. 🙄

Chase’s statement reads:

“Fraud on a bank account involves someone illegally accessing someone else’s account and making withdrawals, transfers, or purchases without the account holder’s permission.”

But in Russell’s case, the scammers used a “deceptive scheme or trick” to cheat him out of his money. So, it’s not really fraud, just a really good con. 🎩

If you’re ever unsure if the person calling you is a real bank representative, just call the number on the back of your card or visit a branch. Or, you know, just assume everyone’s a scammer until proven otherwise. 🕵️‍♀️
