It’s unfortunate for comedy enthusiasts as well as supporters of Taylor Tomlinson and Stephen Colbert, as CBS’s late-night show, After Midnight, is wrapping up. The show, which features Taylor Tomlinson as host and currently occupies the slot previously held by The Late Late Show, will conclude after two seasons. Tomlinson has decided to step down to concentrate more on stand-up comedy. Despite the recent renewal for a third season, the final episode of the series will air in June. In a CBS statement, Tomlinson expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of this remarkable journey and acknowledged that, although it was a difficult choice, she needed to resume full-time stand-up touring. She thanked CBS, Stephen Colbert, the producers, and the entire After Midnight team for their love, support, and unforgettable moments.
The show titled “After Midnight” debuted in January 2024, receiving a mix of reviews and raising questions about its approach to refreshing the format of its previous Comedy Central series “@midnight”. Since then, this program, which brings together a panel of three comedians who engage in games inspired by internet trends, has been consistently tweaking its structure to align more closely with a traditional late-night talk show. From the outset, it’s introduced an opening monologue and a segment where the comedians converse on a couch, answering typical interview questions. The show has garnered a loyal fan base who appreciate its quirky nature, but has faced challenges in securing high-profile guests, breaking into mainstream popularity, or creating viral moments. In CBS’s statement, Stephen Colbert expressed gratitude for their ongoing support and productive collaboration on “After Midnight”, praising the team’s unwavering dedication. “Although we were eager to kick off our third season in the fall,” he added, “we respect Taylor’s decision to return to stand-up comedy full time.
According to reports, CBS doesn’t seem to be planning to replace the time slot of “After Midnight” with another late-night program. It’s likely that whatever content does take its place won’t involve anything as amusingly simple as three comedians, who are blindfolded, attempting to identify milk and water by touch.
