In the prequel to Yellowstone, the original 1923 cast and their characters are facing tremendous hardships that would put them through the wringer, with one actor receiving a cautionary note about these challenges directly from Taylor Sheridan himself.
Current times are challenging for the Duttons. If you’re Alex or Spencer, you’re struggling to navigate your way cross-country, aiming to reach Montana safely. For those among them who are Liz, Cara, Jacob, or Jack, it’s about enduring the harsh winter weather and its accompanying hardships, including animal encounters… and the occasional need for rabies shots.
It’s clear that things were extremely difficult in 1923 where she is currently. However, none of the characters seem to be enduring as much hardship as Alex is experiencing now. After surviving a harrowing sea voyage, she was subsequently subjected to degrading medical examinations at Ellis Island.
Moving forward, Episode 4 seems set to present new challenges as the character hops on a train bound for Montana. However, it’s worth noting that a possible encounter with trouble might occur in the women’s restroom before this journey begins. Fortunately, actress Julia Schlaepfer was privy to a heads-up from the show’s creator.
Taylor Sheridan told Julia Schlaepfer he’d “drag her through hell” in 1923 Season 2
As I prepared for Season 2, Sheridan reached out to me, offering a heads-up: the narrative arc for my character, Alex, would be especially challenging this time around.
In this rephrased version, the first person is used, making it more personal and engaging as if the speaker (the fan or reader) is directly involved in the conversation between Speaking to People and Schlaepfer.
She conveyed that Taylor Sheridan contacted her prior to penning Episode 3, and he said something along the lines of, “The character is an immigrant arriving in America. She’s a young woman who’s pregnant, and for all practical purposes, they don’t acknowledge her marriage. Consequently, she would face numerous challenges.
He said, “I’m keen on penning this episode, but I need to confirm if you’re comfortable with the intense emotional content, as it might be quite distressing for you.
She even added that Sheridan told her, “I’m kind of going to drag you through hell a little bit.’”
As a gamer, I found myself immersed in Episode 3, and it seemed like the creators, specifically Schlaepfer, had gone the extra mile. They tapped into my own emotional well, diving deep into my personal family history to mirror the turmoil Alex was experiencing.
She said, “That’s alright. That’s alright. Yes, let’s share this tale.” She did so because it was a genuine experience many people have lived through. Her great-grandfather had immigrated to America through Ellis Island with just $15, which is why she felt compelled to tell the story.
1923 Season 2 Episode 3 is available to stream on Paramount+ now.
