As a seasoned cinephile with a lifetime of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the inclusion of Taylor Dayne on The Golden Bachelorette was a refreshing twist for this longtime viewer of the Bachelor extended universe. Her performance on Joan Vassos’s prom night date was nothing short of iconic, and it brought a touch of authentic cultural cachet to an otherwise predictable episode.
A running joke for viewers of the Bachelor extended universe is the unremarkable musicians who have shown up to serenade contestants over the years. But this week’s episode of The Golden Bachelorette brought us yet another performer with actual cultural cachet — and a history with some of the show’s contestants. On Wednesday, ’80s songstress Taylor Dayne showed up to perform two songs for Joan Vassos’s first group date, which mimicked a prom night straight out of the John Hughes canon. Vassos and eight men danced the night away in a high-school gymnasium in Calabasas, California, with Dayne performing her enduring hits “Tell It to My Heart” and “Love Will Lead You Back.” But what the cameras didn’t capture was the boomer version of the Chase Rice and Victoria Fuller debacle behind the scenes.
During breaks from filming, Dayne was approached by several contestants, some in their 50s and others in their 60s, who seemed to think they had met before. (Dayne herself is 62 years old and unmarried.) “A couple of them came backstage and asked, ‘Did we go out together?’ I was taken aback and replied, What?! I said, ‘If it was through a dating app like Hinge or Bumble, it’s plausible,'” she jokes. One of them challenged her on this and informed Joan. I was just as surprised, thinking, Oh my God, I don’t remember. It was reminiscent of a Tig Notaro moment. “Really? When did we meet?” the person asked. As it turns out, contestant Jordan Heller told Vassos they had dated Dayne “five years ago,” but Dayne claims she can’t recall this at all. (In an interview, Vassos seemed amused by the revelation.) Dayne also made it clear that her brief backstage encounter with Heller was not flirtatious in nature.
The singer, who had read “The Golden Bachelor” during its initial release, was delighted to receive a call inviting her to join the series. “They wanted to organize an ’80s-themed event,” Dayne recounts. “I wasn’t solely motivated by that, but I responded, ‘If you want to set it up in a gymnasium or any place like that, then I’m your woman.’ Dayne approximated the filming day to be around 16 hours, give or take, for her to perform the two songs. “They aimed to create an atmosphere of a fantastic party,” she clarifies. “It was like they were revisiting their youth. I’m accustomed to being the soundtrack of people’s lives.” Watching Vassos’s suitors dance in an attempt to charm with pop music was a particularly enjoyable moment for Dayne. “They were informed that they had to move and dance,” she adds. “The men definitely took up the challenge. It’s quite distinctive when men are dancing out of love. Trust me, their showy side comes out. They were putting on quite a show.
Is there a chance that she might consider being a Golden Bachelorette herself? “I never rule things out,” Dayne states. “I found it enjoyable, and I was well taken care of. Mainly, I wish for Joan to find genuine love.
