In The Monkey, one particularly noteworthy death scene has garnered attention since the start, and as it turns out, lead actress Tatiana Maslany shares a personal bond with an individual featured in that specific scene. (Proceed with caution: spoilers follow!)
One memorable scene from the latest Stephen King adaptation that stands out among others is sure to be etched in viewers’ minds even before they watch the film, as hinted by the trailer.
In my enthusiasm to revisit my childhood abode in search of that unforgiving monkey toy, I’m accompanied by a realtor named Barbara. As she tinkers with a kitchen cupboard, the door miraculously swings open, revealing a hidden shotgun on the wall. Unfortunately, as the gun falls, it discharges, leaving Barbara injured.
In this scene, Hal remains stunned, drenched in blood. Interestingly, this particular instance where someone meets their end is one of Tatiana Maslany’s favorite ‘kills’ from the horror film, yet it’s not due to the gruesome act itself that she finds appeal.
Tatiana Maslany’s best friend played the realtor in The Monkey
When TopMob enquired about her preferred death scene, Maslany replied, “The scene where I played the realtor in the house is the one I adore most. The character’s name is Tess, who happens to be my dearest friend since we were both seven years old.
Initially, I found it thrilling to witness her hilarious portrayal in that part. Moreover, I believe her death scene is particularly iconic since it resembles those dramatic moments in films where you anticipate the impending fate.
The expansive setting seems to stretch on forever, with both the spectators and Theo James’ character Hal anticipating the imminent, undoubtedly fierce confrontation approaching.
According to Maslany’s explanation, “Theo’s character seems to be in anticipation, as everyone else is too, waiting for something unexpected. It’s like the traditional mix of horror and humor, with her having 900 keys to unlock a single lock, creating that palpable tension.
However, it’s not just Tatiana Maslany who has a personal tie to the universe of The Monkey; even Osgood Perkins, the director, screenwriter, and actor, drew inspiration from his own contemplations about mortality for the project.
